As someone who's played a healer, I will usually contact OOC first and check in, but my approach was always that my character would offer to help and try to, but we would find a game mechanic reason to make it not work. In most games, you can find something or ask the mods about it so that everyone is IC and gets what they want and playing out the trying and failing can be really interesting. It sucks that players were trying to work against you instead of with you.
