The ultimate goal wasn't to go back home. The ultimate goal was to win a war and stop everyone's home from being destroyed. Going home was just icing on the cake. So much so that the characters don't actually have to go home if they don't want to, and can come back whenever.
yeah but even there going home was still at least a part of the ultimate goal for most characters - they wanted to win the war and go back to their worlds. most characters aren't going to just say "okay i'll stay in this new world" unless they don't have anything to return to, they're going to want to go back home to their own world and the people they care about if given the option.
but that was a personal goal, not the goal of the game. some characters cared about the fate of all the universes as a whole, some characters only cared about their homes, but that was an individual choice.
as people above have pointed out, luceti did have a goal aside from going home, but that was completely wrapped up by the end of the time travel plot. we should have had endgame happen within a month of that plot ending, because really, there was nothing else for them to do after that.
