How would you describe Ass and Lem's "optical camouflage" powers? It's clearly not hologram tech, since it alters their voices and they can remove physical components (like Asseylum's necklace). But it's not a complete transformation, since Lemrina's legs aren't fixed even when she transforms.

I think you could. Aldnoah is basically treated like magic in this show anyway. There's probably the same kind of logic behind Asseylum/Lemrina's disguises that also governs the audience chambers -- even though the characters aren't physically on Mars/in the king's bedroom, they still have to ascend the steps and can touch stuff and junk. It becomes physical. That's pretty much magic, only this is a space opera/mecha/sci-fi show so it has to be some ancient bullshit long-lost element that powers everything. It's no different than the Reaper/Prothean tech in Mass Effect or Unobtanium in Avatar.
