where's the lie though? dwrp's playerbase is mean-spirited and petty, and mods are no exception. i wouldn't trust them with a system like that either.

Re: YOUR IDEAL GAME RULES, WANKY OR NOT

- A quest system with some kind of "must create a log and finish X number of comments to complete the quest" mechanism. Quest completion would get IC rewards.

- AC based on quest completion -- as long as a player completes at least one quest they're good for AC for the month. Mods would contact players who hadn't finished a quest in order to ask for other thread links, and failure to provide them would mean they're swept. Since quests are already being submitted to the mods, this would mean only the "AC warning" group of players would have to do anything special for AC at all.

- "Apps" consisting of a meaningful set of questions (like, in a horror game, "describe your character's greatest fear" or "how does your character respond to stress"), any game-specific sections (powers, changes, etc), plus a couple of linked sample threads.

- At least one person judging an app must be canon familiar. If no one on the app team is, do what Damned used to do and recruit a player to look at it.

- Information/plot access NOT dependent on interacting with mod NPCs. No NPC gatekeeping or exclusive control of events except in an explicitly PvE scenario, and in those scenarios, beating the NPCs and taking their stuff should always be possible.

yep. anonymized apps (which were mostly a sample first-person post) got voted on by the players. if you beat a certain percentage threshold you got in.

Re: COSMOGRAPHIA

(Anonymous) 2016-04-05 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
cosmographia is interesting because it is divided up into 3 sections

- island of misfit wankers who go here because they know their shit won't be tolerated anywhere else (al, pedro)

- island of mediocre players who are attracted because of the canon the game is based on but are fairly generic and leave you no hooks, but are nonoffensive in terms of characterization besides this (berry, katamaris)

- island of good players who have become too invested in the setting/their cr to drop or are here only because their friends enabled them into it. more often than not they lived through lepo and tora having a civil war in the mod team.

the thing about cosmographia is that the mods could drop the game at any time and nobody in the playerbase would actually bat an eye, they would just carry on with their lives because the game is a shambling husk at this point.

as somebody who was in the wake during the lj days, i think that cosmo and wake in their current states are very very similar.

we'll never get endgame info and the game will never officially close. it will just be stuck in limbo for several more months until the comods decide to get backbones and shut it down themselves.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-05 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
and, surprise surprise, it was all about who you knew in-game and/of if your app was entertaining to read. and it was supposed to be anonymous but yeah... ha ha.

you've done a pretty good breakdown of why cosmo's playerbase is crazy levels of dedicated

i wouldn't call berry's player mediocre, though. walker is a tremendous neckbeard who can't write a decent app to save his life and spends more time whining about apps than he does writing them. i also enjoy his over-the-top claims that it takes him four hours of app writing to crank out a single paragraph, always written where the mods can see so that they'll feel bad for him and accept his shit apps out of pity

i mean, this is the guy who apped in a pokemon oc whose only defining trait is, in his own words, "being hella gay." the majority of her interactions with other underaged girls involve her creepily flirting with them or trying to push her multitude of kinks onto them

and lbr, the mods practically have dropped the game before. lepo was a decent mod who actually got shit done, and when lynsey first became a mod she was a decent mod who actually got shit done, but aside from that? the mods in this game hardly do anything. the game practically runs itself and always has, and the mods don't even do the bare minimum required. there's a player who's been banned for weeks now and they still haven't even bothered to remove her character journals from the game, for fuck's sake. (there was also nothing about the ban on the ooc comm, which i'm not particularly pleased about. i'm not asking for monthly sotgs here, but communicate with your goddamn player base)

cosmographia is a game that, against all odds, survived a wanksplosion and ensuing mod titfit + coup that no other game could have survived. but that's because the mods have always had zero presence in this game

former mod here and ia. it'd be really hard to stay impartial with a rule like that, there's just too much grey area around what a main character is. do they mean THE protag only, like sailor moon for example? or can you not app from the core cast, the inner senshi, either?

there's just too much room for abusing ~interpreting~ a rule like that. which is why it's in this thread I guess.

as an ac mod the only thing that seems like a lot of work is the warning list is being approached via pms. that's a way you could go if you want the fact they're failing kept private, but personally i think making a reminder post with the list at the end of each ac period would be way easier.

don't go to them, remind them that they need to come to you.
