IMO, Marjory Delaqua and Kasmeer Meade, also from Guild Wars 2, are a better example. Caithe and Faolain have long since broken up (for understandable reasons) by the time the game begins and don't have anything close to a happy or even civil relationship with each other.
Marjory and Kasmeer are major characters in the game's "Living World" content, that is, content that is released over time, so you could sort of call it the ongoing story in the game. Marjory is a necromancer detective, modeled after a film noir protagonist. Kasmeer is from a formerly prominent family has lost much of its fortune and prestige to the point where she no longer considers herself a noble. She came to work for Marjory and they developed a relationship overtime. They even had an onscreen kiss during the climax of the first Living World story arc. Currently, they're quite happy together.
Aside from them, there's other, smaller instances. There's a few minor characters in the game's various story paths who are in gay and lesbian relationships, and a few NPCs will offhandedly mention their boyfriends/girlfriends in casual conversation with them.
I more meant that Marjory and Kasmeer were a better example of lesbians in the game. Caithe and Faolain are more like Faolain's obsession with Caithe after they've broken up and her attempts to corrupt her to the Nightmare.
i don't think that actually changes their sexual orientation, though. they're still examples of lesbians. they don't have to be flawless or have perfect relationships to be examples.
yes, yes, i know, not good enough. whatever, i'm starting to no longer give a fuck how many excuses you make for ignoring canon lgbt characters.
I'm glad! I rather love Marjory (and Kasmeer) myself. Sadly, about half of the Living World content is currently unavailable, but most of the information, including dialogue scripts, is on the wiki and I'm sure somebody has the scenes uploaded on YouTube somewhere.
Yes, how dare I want to play a character I actually like.
-must be easily able to ship outside of casts with no effort whatsoever
If I'm looking for characters to play specifically for shipping, then yes. Yes I do want a character that is easy to ship (IE: Not a literal monster, something that most people would be squicked by).
-must have played the character
If you're talking about my comments for Ciri or Katelyn, I wasn't saying I wouldn't play them. I was saying that I hadn't played the canon, so I can't say for sure how well they do or do not fit the criteria I listed. I would need to play those canons to be able to tell if I like the characters and if they fit what I am looking for.
If you're talking as in 'must have played the canon', then hell yes. Nobody should play a character without experiencing the canon first.
-now the criteria is no longer just "no abusive childhoods or rape", but "must have a completely happy life in all ways at all times"
I didn't say they have to have a completely happy childhood. Caithe and Faolain don't fit my criteria because Faolain turned evil a long time ago and has been abusive to Caithe for years. Just because they don't technically have a childhood (Sylvari are 'born' as adults) doesn't mean that the floodgates are open to abusive pasts.
-must not be from mmos
Yes, I don't want to play a character from an MMO. They're shallow, and they aren't usually accepted to games in the first place.
-must "not revolve around social issues"
No, I don't want to play out angst. I want fluffy fun shipping times, not angst.
-must be able to find castmates in all games they're interested in
Where the fuck did you get this from?
anon who started the 'lesbians from video games' thing
Marjory and Kasmeer are a much better example of what I am looking for, actually. ngl I've toyed with the idea of playing Kasmeer, but I always feel bad playing MMO characters, because there's not as much depth to them as characters from other kinds of canons.
I never said they weren't lesbians or that they weren't good enough. I just said that I thought Marjory and Kasmeer were a better example and more in line with what people are looking for.
Have you considered that you care too much about people playing m/m and f/f relationships with characters that, while not explicitly gay, are not explicitly straight either and THAT'S what makes you the asshole?
Because really unless a character has been confirmed 100% straight, who cares?
so why start an argument about it? you could have just said that marjory and kasmeer are other examples, rather than "your examples suck, try these instead."
about characters that don't really have a canon sexuality. anons have told you this repeatedly and you keep ignoring them. now you're going to just ignore me when i say it, so why am i even bothering?
"uh, most of these characters are really shitty and are just offensive, stereotype-riddled caricatures of gay people. Got anything better than that?"
"YOU'RE BEING TOO PICKY!"
"All I want is a character I actually like. I'll read new shit to find new characters I like, here is a list of things I like."
"FINE! Here's five characters who fit what you want."
"Four of these don't even fit what I was looking for, though I guess the fifth might work, I'll have to check that out. But that's still just ONE example, there's not a whole list of characters who actually fit what I am looking for."
"YOU'RE BEING TOO PICKY!"
"Because I want to play a character that is actually fun to play?"
Except I didn't say the examples sucked, certainly not for someone who doesn't play video games and just googled a list. I said I had a different example that I thought fit better and thought that giving the canon context on Caithe and Faolain would be helpful.
personally i think the unfamiliarity of the cast is one reason i haven't bothered watching it, but there are other factors and overplayed tropes that make me really not care about some of them
plus, committing to an ongoing show and watching a single movie are totally different
I don't even play m/m, but I know I bend characterization slightly from time to time for the sake of fun. That's what the hobby's for. Another player making a (supposedly) straight guy bi so they can play a m/m pair doesn't bother me because usually the guy being exclusively interested in females wasn't a big deal or even stated in the first place. In the cases where it is, or their female love interest is like their one true love 4ever, yeah, I do sideeye the character jumping to "Hey let's have sex with my male best friend", but I just don't see it playing out that way much nowadays. It's usually pretty slowburn and sometimes unplanned with the players realizing their characters happen to have great chemistry. So w/e.
