i put up opt-out posts for characters that warrant it just to show upfront that i know the sensitive subject/s at hand are subjective and that i put more than a few seconds of thought into them
there are plenty of people who wouldn't care enough to actually opt-out but might just want to avoid someone who plays those characters thoughtlessly, and a coherent opt-out post is a low-effort way to signal that you're a decent RPer because it doesn't require anyone to go out of their way to message anyone
process of pming: - see character - know that character is associated with subject matter you want to avoid (if you're not canon familiar, this involves spontaneously researching this character, or else waiting for the avoided material to come up when you weren't expecting it) - internally deliberate over whether the character's player handles the matter in a way that warrants you opting out of interaction with them entirely, without any reliable information to base this assessment on -internally deliberate over whether you need the opt-out enough to warrant PMing the player, which you have no idea how they'll respond to - write a PM and send it
process of replying to an opt-out post: - see opt-out post - read information - opt out, or don't
it's the same amount of physical effort in terms of typing, but the first way puts a lot more decisions into the hands of the person who might not know the canon well enough to make those decisions, instead of just having the person who plays the character quickly explain what's up and provide an easy yes/no option. the net amount of effort that goes into the second way is much lower.
