another point that nobody's brought up: it's also a matter of honest communication. if somebody apps hannibal lecter and doesn't put up an opt out post, he's still well known enough that most players will know what they're getting into and can contact the player themselves if needed. if they apped from got/asoif, other players may not know the character's specific issues, but because the series is infamous for rape/murder/torture/incest they still have a decent idea of what they might be getting into.

but if that person apps an oc or someone from an obscure series, and doesn't warn others about what they're getting into, then they're a fucking dick. opt out posts are a convenient way for the player to let others in the game know what's up before they initiate cr with them. it's also a good idea for characters who aren't obscure, but aren't famous enough that nearly everybody knows their name.

I play a guy from an obscure series with a LOT of shit that people might not be comfortable enough with. the opt-out post is basically "look, I know you don't know what the series is but here's x, y, and z which you might not like." it's just covering your bases
