not in this fandom (in comics) and nayrt but this is basically a huge thing. it's not even being a proxy it's just skeevy for other reasons and both sharon and peggy are kind of... boring...
i'm on the het side of comic fandom though so i can't tell you what excuses the stucky and stony people give.
where the fuck is all the steve/diana already, that was all i wanted from that superman batman shitshow!
a. steve should still have some trust issues over what she was up to in caws. b. she's related to peggy. beyond that, captain america is, essetially, someone sharon "grew up" hearing about and probably enjoying the exploits of. there's a squicky area of childhood idolization there that i can't get past. c. peggy's body isn't even cold in the ground yet ffs. d. even disregarding c, if peggy got over steve, we've yet to see steve get over her - and, in fact, him getting over her flies into the face of what was presented as cap's tragic flaw in the movie: his inability to let go of the past (bucky) because there's still a part of him that longs for it and will probably always remember that skinny kid from brooklyn. e. the pacing for the romance was absolute trash. f. emily van camp is possibly the worst actor in the mcu, even below sebstan's grunt acting. g. let's say i bought her acting, though. it still makes no sense that this self-sufficient woman who never told anyone about her famous aunt lest it detract from her own merit would want her aunt's seconds...especially with there even being a hint of doubt that steve would look at her and see, for a split second, peggy.
i felt more invested in wanda and vision's relationship and i'm not even sure if that's supposed to be read as romantic.
i'm going to preface this by saying i'm not a steve/sharon fan and never will be. but bringing peggy into any disagreement about their relationship at all is dumb. peggy got married and moved on. whether steve does/has is debatable, but let's be real for a moment; we all have that ex we don't fully get over, whether it's through hate or love. peggy probably always loved steve and steve will always love peggy, alive or dead, but they both had an unrequited love. that means there's no actual way anything can live up to the fantasy of what could have been, because nothing ever really was.
sharon being related to peggy doesn't have any real relevance, neither does 'childhood idolization', because anyone steve's apparent age in that world is going to have grown up with the same sort of 'idolization' (look at coulson), so unless you're saying steve has to date someone from asgard or gamora or something, there's no real way for him not to have someone know him on some level, just like any high-level celebrity.
my own personal reason for not liking sharon/steve is that it was a friendship and potential interest based on a lie. (and ftr, that potential interest sort of shows that while he may not be over peggy all the way and never will be, he's still interested in possibilities of his own).
outside of tony/pepper, the pacing for all the romances in mcu is trash. i hated nat/bruce all off screen. thor/jane's love at first concussion was just ridiculous. tony/pepper are really the only pair that have any build up, and she's not in awe of him and will call him out on his shit. while i dislike tony for a variety of reasons, if i had to pick a believable, sustainable ship in the series, i'd pick tony/pepper. even though i think she deserves better.
most of us don't get frozen for 70+ years. not to mention, he didn't know that when he was interested. like, all the excuses are just excuses. you can not like a ship and that's okay, but trying to build up bullshit reasons for it aren't necessary.
not to mention, lots of people do wind up dating family members of their ex's.
and again, steve/peggy was a fantasy for both of them, not a reality, so it's not like he's dipping his wick in every candle on the family tree. like, come on.
why are you? it's not like he knew sharon growing up. not like he saw her as a kid or anything. sure, someone's aunt's ex flame getting hot and heavy with the younger niece could be gross in some contexts, but in this context, where they're all essentially strangers, pulling 'but family' into it is just a lame attempt to make it gross for a reason it's not.
liking someone that's related and separated by a few generations is less gross when he's actually the same age as both of them at the times he knows them. it'd be gross if he was old man steve and asking sharon to tuck in his hemorrhoids.
so? that has nothing to do with the list presented. stop moving the goal posts. 'eww, she's family to his ex', 'eww, she grew up with him', 'eww, i just don't like it'.
don't like it. you don't need to make up bullshit reasons why. 'i just don't like it' suffices. the reason this became a thing is because the excuses made were just that, lousy excuses. just admit you don't like it because it's a shitty ship and move on with your life.
a. Even in the MCU Cap's a guy that gives everyone twenty second chances. Bucky, Tony, Fury, Spidey as he was fighting him (look at how proud/happy that man was to find out that Peter was from New York. Albeit Parker is from Queens and he's a Brooklyn boy.) You really just need to be a Hydra Agent or a Nazi for him not to give you a second chance. b. So Cap can't have any relationship period. Because cap was a nationally beloved hero, even before he was unfrozen. There's an entire museum wing dedicated to him in DC, and odds are it wasn't the only one. So everyone's grown up hearing about him, his exploits, and idolizing him. And considering how shaky the MCU is on the Hulk's orgins right now, there is a high chance it's going to be trying to recreate a super solider because of cap's legacy. c. peggy was also suffering from dementia and was bedridden. Cap knew this was coming d. see c. Also Cap has issues letting go on people that are alive. Fact of the matter is cap didn't forget bucky in TWS but he didn't obsess over him until he saw the boy from brooklyn was alive. Then he wanted to do everything to find him. e. Yeah, but then again it was done for two movies but still bad f. That's like, your opinion maaaaaan. g. what.
