What's worse is they snuck in the decreased capture rate, people had been suspecting it was happening, but it took people using bots to confirm it. You don't make such a change in the game's difficulty without letting people know.
Niantic basically fucked over the suburban and rural players hardcore - they bare had enough stops to resupply their pokeballs, and very few interesting spawns, now it's about impossible.
probably to try to get people to buy more pokeballs, or they ended up panicking about people catching too many people too quickly and tried to slow down the podedex accumulation so people won't quit the game too soon.
I just read a more detailed analysis which suggests that the base capture rate hasn't changed, but bonuses for curveballs, Nice/Great/etc are borked. Which would explain why I haven't noticed the capture rate people've been complaining about because I always ignored all that and just chucked balls willy-nilly anyway.
On the other hand, they seem to have fixed the issue of balls (thrown without a curve) inexplicably veering off into the abyss on their own. TBH to me that's totally worth it, that shit was annoying as hell.
