Oh my god I had to deal with that recently. I got so fucking sick of it so fast. I had literally two people (and a third with their foot out the door) that would actually question and challenge my Ambiguous Morality character's behaviors/morals/priorities in a game where I was regularly tagged by 20+ characters at any given time.
Why did I have 18 characters that were just okay with my character being a rampaging murderer and not giving a fuck about the lives of certain people? They kept trying to be super special friends with my character and tried really hard to get on their good side and it just got so fucking boring.
I apped that character for the strain and drama involved in a character like that! Motherfuckers you missed the point so hard.
jesus fucking christ this. Had an in game event force my character to be upfront about how many people he's killed and hurt to achieve his ends, most people didn't bat an eye at any of it and then started to come up with arguments about why they couldn't judge him without knowing all the details.
Couldn't help but think that if I played an actual villain instead of a Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds type, it would have gotten a very different reaction, especially since so few characters in game know anything about him and his backstory.
I play a vicious anti-hero has talked about killing people on the public PC network, murdered NPCs in action logs with other superheroes nearby, and on separate occasions murdered multiple PC villains/otherwise dangerous individuals who then came back to life because of the game mechanic. Two of them told the community at large what had happened, one was not typically violent or a "villain" in any way and another was mind-controlled into the act that my character killed him for and he knew it. Not a single character/player has approached him or me about consequences, and he has CR with some straight-laced no-murder-rule vigilantes.
So pretty much having the word "hero" attached to your character in any capacity gets you a free pass from those creepy vibes and bad feelings, as far as I can tell. Good lord.
Have you tried approaching them with ideas for possible consequences? They might be up for it if they know you are too. Considering how many people (both heroes and villains) get really offended when they have to face IC consequences, they might be assuming that you don't want there to be consequences and trying to avoid wank.
While I haven't gone to people with specific ideas for what I think their characters should want to do to him, I do put it in every plot post I make to the ooc community that I'm open to any possible consequences, if that's worth anything. I haven't gotten any bites that way. I just think it's interesting that saying or acting creepy/violent for a character that oocly players know is villainous can seriously alter their cr, but it's much harder to find that "ic reaction" or what-have-you applied to creepy/violent hero characters.
