is it? because i've heard reference to aegon in the tv show as the promised prince (which is why rhaegar kept naming his sons that in the book), and it's probably why they held off revealing the name until the finale. aegon's a fixated name for rhaegar for a reason, and i'm pretty sure the name was actually mentioned in the series, just not in relation to jon.
so by that logic, rhaegar passed that hope along to his wife, which is why without rhaegar there to enforce it, she still named him aegon targaryen to her brother on her deathbed. she could just as easily have given him a stark first name, but for all we know, rhaegar convinced her their baby was some special coming, which is why she insisted ned protect him.
I don't think so. They clearly filmed it in a way that echoed Robb and Talisa's wedding, and there were still something of "zomg true love" about what we saw before that. If they really meant to go for the other angle, they flubbed it.
Also, Rhaegar already had a baby Aegon, so that was a dick move.
i'm not entirely sure of the timelines, so forgive me if i'm wrong, but weren't most of the targaryens dead at that point? i mean, by the time lyanna gave birth? rhaegar was dead, his kids were dead, his ex wife and all the other targaryens were dead, and i don't know if dany was already born or not, but i'm wondering if maybe naming him aegon wasn't a last declaration of love for her dead hubby. like, rhaegar was sure of the prince who was promised and thought it might be of his line. with all his line extinguished, it's possible that lyanna gave him back the legacy of aegon in the last moments of her life.
lyanna was in the tower of joy for some time before delivering jon, so she couldn't have known about the sack of the red keep and the deaths of rhaegar's children by elia unless someone came and told her - and the foot of the tower was pretty heavily guarded by men loyal to rhaegar, so not likely.
interestingly the show has never outright named rhaegar's other two children who died at the hands of the mountain so it's possible they're not going to and are just counting on people not to question the name when rhaegar already had one son with that name.

Arthur Dayne was one of the men guarding her and he was one of Rhaegar's best friends, so chances are he learned about his death and told her 'cause I can't see why he wouldn't. Either way Lyanna clearly knew Rhaegar was dead by the time Ned showed up since her last words were asking him to protect Jon from Robert. She at least knew Robert had won the rebellion.
Assuming Aegon is Jon's real name from the books I think Lyanna decided on it (Rhaegar would've been dead for months and I figure they didn't have much time to discuss potential baby names) because Rhaegar was: a.) convinced he was going to father the Prince that was Promised and b.) he wanted him to be named after Aegon the Conqueror. It's hard to say whether she actually believed in the prophecy or if it was more about her love for Rhaegar.
Also Elia and Rhaegar's kids have definitely been named but it was scarce and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of show watchers don't remember them, lol.
Actually, in a way, Rhaegar was pretty obsessed with prophecy.
1.) At first he was pretty sure he was the Prince that was Promised. 2.) The dragon must always have three heads. He was obsessed with having a third legitimate child. though I'm not quite sure why the annulment was necessary, as Targs are known for polygamist marriages. Aegon the Conquer had two sister-wives. 3.) Once Lyanna was pregnant, he was pretty sure that particular child was going to be the Prince that was Promised.
So in some weird obsessive way, Rhaegar did kinda sort know???? Or thought he knew. Either way we're still not 100% sure who The Prince that was Promised is going to be. Jon is the obvious, and even though this season seemed to be the "payoff" season, with not a lot of surprises we still have 6 more episodes worth of surprises.
