you're more likely to get tags on a tdm than on bakerstreet too. i doubt even half the people on here are actually going to reserve, let alone app.

i get kind of ass blasted over this because there are two wildly different schools of thought on this and they do affect others.

on side a, you have people that are so desperate for any kind of actual play, they play on a tdm. they're guaranteed to get play there and they have zero intention of apping. they just want to play. i get it, but tdms are not a replacement for bakerstreet.

on side b, you have people that already freak out if there's more that one version on a tdm or won't bother with a tdm if there's 'their' character on it already and won't app into the game because they take tdms as 'dibs'. there are also those who use the tdm as 'proof' that they've been reserve sniped because 'we were on the tdm. didn't they see? we/i wanted to app'.

no one can tell anymore because tdms are being used in place of bs memes. i really wish people with zero interest in the game would stop playing on the tdm, or that people would stop saying this is a good thing to do because it's 'just a tdm'.

That's honestly how I feel too.

i'm the opposite. i absolutely can't stand people on side b, and anything that drives those fuckers off is a good thing.

nah, i get that. but it just keeps feeding into why tdms are pointless. you see people calling them unwelcoming and no one's tagging them, wah. a lot of people avoid tdms because they're concentrating on stuff in their game and don't want to waste time on stuff that might not even pan through when they have actual game shit to deal with. it's a self feeding cycle. game players don't play/look on the tdm because of wanting to concentrate on game tags, and people complain that a game is unwelcoming because of a lukewarm or non-reception on a tdm. all this talk about tdms makes me hate them, and i've stopped using them and looking at them for my games.

with el nysa it's unfortunately a bit more complicated just because tdms are treated as game canon, and current players are encouraged to tag potential ones in order to get REP points.

on the plus side it gives good incentive to current players to tag around, though i think most will still just focus on tagging their friends/castmates.

on the downside, if you app and didn't do tdm then you've lost out on a couple REP points and possibly lose out on a CR opportunity.

while i see where you're coming from, i think the usefulness of tdms depends largely what you're using them for, as well as personal taste. like as a gauge for what the playerbase is like or how easy it is to get cr? oh yeah, they're completely useless. but here's a few things that i've found tdms handy for myself.

Samples: this is the biggest one for me. i hate writing samples, but doing a few tdm threads is not only easier for me, it's more fun, too. it can be tricky if your toplevel doesn't get cr, but ime you'll get a few sample worthy threads if you're willing to tag around. this is also why i'm not bothered by people outside the game treating it as a meme. even if bob has no plans to app, he still ended up helping alice with her app.

Voicetesting/Playing with the setting: you can voicetest anywhere, but it's nice to have a place where you can test out how your character would react to the setting. having a place where you can do that with a little guidance from the mods in the form of tdm prompts really helps with my confidence when i get into the game.

Building cr & getting newbie bs out of the way: in all the games i've played in that had tdms, there was always the option to make your tdm threads canon. not only did it give me a little circle of cr to start with, it also allowed me to get a lot of the "ahhhh oh my god where am i what's happening" reactions out of the way and get to the real meat of the game. and even if you don't make your threads canon, you still got to experiment a little and you might get some ideas you can recycle later.

but that's just my experiences. some people might have different experiences, or might just have different tastes. they might like the things i hate or vice versa. but imo i think we'd be better off if we all treated tdms a little like memes: they're not something we should take super seriously or get too bummed out over if they don't work out, but they still have the potential to be fun and lead to more substantial rping.

TDMS must have come a long way since I last played in them. Last I did anything with TDMs, they were not game canon, and I hated getting really good CR in the TDM then, when it came down to game time, having to rehash a thread with someone. Or the CR just never worked as well as it did in the TDM. I avoid them completely now because I found them completely useless.
