The final episode wasn't even that bad as a whole. It was just the last five minutes that made everything crash and burn with the introduction of baby-ex-machina god child.
There is, in fact, both a novel and manga. Both are only available in Japanese, though. The manga, at the very least, makes the romance between Shindo and Tsukai progress more organically, and the novel is its own fascinating beast altogether.

i'm one of the few that liked the ending, but shindo and tsukai's romance bothered me. it came out of nowhere and seemed very forced. it may have been more interesting if they had decided to have a child purely as a means to an end. if the novel/manga expands on their relationship more, then that's fine. it's unfortunate the anime ending happened the way it did.
i'm also a little bitter about shindo dying. i find it hard to believe someone with supposed renowned competence couldn't find a solution that didn't involve a death.
