If you don't have an icon that you think "fits" your post, just use the default or something, don't embed an icon-sized image at the top of your post. It's annoying and distracting and pointless.

unless the image is fuckhuge I don't see how hard it is to avert your eyes slightly to one side to read the tag unless you have super mega ADD where anything that bucks your routine sends you into a spiral and ruins your day
I don't like embedding icons because I feel like we should be supporting dreamwidth by buying paid time. It's a small company and they've been great to us, so we should show our support to them.
This is why I always buy paid time or just make due with 15 icons.
my inner pedant demands i correct make due to make do, but if someone can't afford to pay for more icons, dw isn't losing out on any money by them embedding. they found a work around because they can't afford it. i've been in the position where i couldn't afford an account and i made do, but i sure as hell wanted more. if they don't have the money, they can't support dw either way. they're not stashing their money away from dw and laughing maniacally.
some people are just broke and find workarounds. like it or not, this is one of them. you're free to just have 15 if you can't afford it, but it's not breaking the tos to embed an icon and they're not doing it to screw over a company.
It might not be directly making dw lose money (by like, increased server costs or whatever) but it still feels wrong to me. Maybe not so much if it's just for one meme or you're test driving a character, but if you're playing a character for a long time (say more than two months or so) and you want to use many icons, I still think it's better to just buy the paid time.
You're right that some people can't afford it, but it's not like everyone on this site is dirt poor. For every person who genuinely can't afford it, there's at least 5 who do have the money but just choose not to pay. Would it be nice to have tons of icons for free? Yeah, it would. But I also like having dreamwidth around, and I'd rather not see Sarah go "we can't afford to keep dreamwidth up, site's closing down" because some people chose to spend their fun money on other stuff and use embeded icons instead.
and yet there are still people that pay for dw services, which also offers unpaid services. if they were having trouble with the site or needing money or anything along those lines, they'd probably go back to needing invites for accounts or something that limits unpaid users. they've gotten a huge influx of russian users from lj recently, and most people have at least one paid account they re-up. some people have more than one character they like to play frequently. some buy a premium paid account for one char and just can't afford to keep paying for others, so they prioritize one account over others and might use the embed for their non-paids.
fact is, they allow unpaid services. if you can find a way to get what you want with an unpaid service that they haven't capped or put in the tos, then you're not doing anything wrong. you personally might find it weird or wrong or w/e, but the actuality is that it's not. the site is fine as it is. if there were problems with money, i would hope they'd mention it and give people an option to donate or buy more services. but as it is, if i'm paying for one or two or five accounts but i play ten, i might not want to keep paying a shit load just for icons. because icons is really all people buy the service for.
tldr; until they take away the option to have a free account that allows you to embed shit, no one's doing anything wrong and you're projecting morality where it doesn't need to be.

anon, i have literally seen people dragged on here for using a single default icon when they've had fifteen. or two. or five. whatever. and it's had to be pointed out that it's possible that the person was mobile replying. or that they didn't have an appropriate icon.
icons are the stupidest shit to wank over, and yet we consistently do. without fail. you either have too many (people wanking about someone having a premium paid and then paying for individual icons past that because wow so invested), having shitty icons, having not enough icons, embedding icons, having icons someone doesn't approve of... the list is huge. and still stupid.

Dreamwidth tools will now embed their added icons for you if you have it. I didn't realize it was doing that until I compared my notif to the post. I was like .....huh!
