not to make excuses for thor's assholery, but he is also very much a product of his culture. the asgardians are one of those proud warrior types of cultures and thor was raised his entire life to value war and aggression from the safety of his asgardian bubble, so it makes sense that the first time he left it he went all neocon on the jotuns in short order

he was (and still is, imo) an asshole, mind. but that doesn't exactly go against the grain of asgardian society, and loki's whole "he's too stupid to rule!" justification is especially weak given that loki completely manipulated the situation that led to thor swinging his hammerdick around in the first place

asgardian society doesn't embody thor 1 thor. odin wouldn't scold him if it did and no one would have thought he was being over the top if that were the case.

like loki is making a lot of justifications for his actions but thor being arrogant isn't entirely imagined either.

that's why i orginially said a lot of this is left up to speculation and what people took as important, and what they didn't.

admittedly i only saw the thor movies once and i'm much more familiar with the comics, but thor isn't an idiot, he just comes off that way sometimes because of his values system.

Loki is a product of this culture too. Not that it makes anything he did okay, he's still an asshole and definitely evil, but I think he wouldn't have gone as far as he did if he hadn't been raised the way he had. It makes him sympathetic, but it doesn't excuse all the bad shit he did.
