y...es? do you not understand how savings work? if you have a kid, you keep some money aside for them in case something happens, if you have a pet, you save some money for them too, if you have both, then you save for both, and you save MORE. if you can't afford to save for one or the other, you don't get them.
sure it's possible that you might have a whole bunch of bad stuff happen all at the same time, and nobody's saying HDU GET A PET IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE PAYING OFF CANCER TREATMENT, TEN THOUSAND DOLLAR VET BILL, AND YOUR MORTGAGE AT THE SAME TIME. but if the concept of 'having a pet means i'll probably need additional emergency savings (in addition to whatever savings i might have for grocery/rent/whatever)' is completely alien to you, i don't know what to say.
and yet even if you try to save things, shit happens. pets aren't and shouldn't just be for rich people with 10k in savings. if life happens, and it does, your savings get depleted. having things means money gets spent. it's easier to 'save up for something' before you have it. then you get a car. then you're paying insurance and gas and tolls and oops you got in an accident and have to pay a deductible now and your tires need replacing and someone driving ahead of you made a rock fly up and chip your windshield and now you have to pay for that and so on and so on.
i've seen so many people on here bitching about how immature or useless someone is if they don't have a license and/or a car because how dare they impose on the drivers around them. in this day and age, money is harder to come by for a lot of folks, and more so to save. i would only be pissed off at someone getting a pet while poor if they were abusing it or not feeding it/neglecting it. just not having the money for unexpected vet bills is just how most folks go. same as your own health or car or whatever else that is necessary to 'to be an adult', but that no one can afford. it is next to impossible to save when you're poor. living paycheck to paycheck sucks. and every time i hear advice like 'maybe you should move if your rent is too high' or 'maybe you should go to x if you can't afford y', it's bullshit. you need money to move. you need money to get to places outside of where you can easily manage to go. you need money for everything, and the way the hiring market is for low-wage earners, you just can't afford it. not to save up. not for your health. not for your kids. not for your car. and not for your pet.
but you're going to think what you want to think and that's cool. you're entitled to your opinion, but don't be all surprised when people get pissed off that you're essentially calling people irresponsible assholes for the sin of being poor and daring to want a pet.
jfc 10k in savings is not "rich". if you really think that's "rich" then you definitely aren't financially secure enough for a pet. and guess what? if you're too poor to reliably take care of a pet? then yeah, you are indeed an irresponsible asshole for getting one anyway.
for the sin of being poor and daring to want a pet.
that's exactly what it is
sorry but owning fluffums is a privilege, not a right. wanting a pet is great and all, but being unable to care for one or provide for it IS being an irresponsible asshole
and you know what, money is fucking hard to come by these days, hard to earn, hard to get, hard to keep. you know what costs no money whatsoever? NOT getting a pet
if you can't afford to responsibly provide for a cat or dog just get a rat or something, they don't live long anyway and it's still the pet companionship without the probable expensive bills
i mean that's literally what some people in this thread are saying tho. that a pet should just die in the care of someone who can't care for it rather than people not adopting expensive/medically complex pets if they can't afford them. a bird or snake is cheaper in vet bills and has just as much personality.
even birds aren't cheap if they get sick. i had a cockatiel that had chronic health problems and that bird ran me up thousands of dollars in vet bills. i could afford it but i had not expected a $30 bird to end up costing me so much.
pets are dependent upon their owners for care, and people should realize that before they get expensive kinds of pets. nobody's holding a gun to your head telling you to get a dog. people not realizing that vet bills are expensive is part of the reason animals get neglected, which they don't deserve when they can't choose their caretakers.
but you're oppressing me and other poor people by saying it's not right for us to have a dog or a cat we can't afford! i should be able to have one because i want one! bootstraps!!!!
your argument boils down to "but i waaaant it!!!" and then you go hinging this animal's entire life on whether you can drum up enough sympathy on the internet if something catastrophic happens. fuck you. absolutely fuck you. there's plenty of times i've denied myself a pet because i couldn't afford one. same with a lot of things in life.
yes, because a fish in a bowl provides the exact same companionship and affection and presence as a dog or a cat. here's your gold star for trying, only not really.
except catastrophic things don't happen to every pet owner. for every five whining for money, there's five hundred that are managing without incident. most poor people manage just fine with pets, cats or dogs, and they feed and nurture them fine. they are not 'expensive'. they are only expensive if bad things happen, and you can say the same for anything you have, yourself included.
most people don't want to life the 'what if' lifestyle. it's easier and often better to have a pet and pray nothing happens (and it usually doesn't), than go without because 'well, the sky might fall'. 'but i want it' is a perfectly valid argument. and ftr, poor shitty asshole people are the ones more likely to feed their pets properly instead of insisting on veganizing their carnivorous animals.
i am literally talking about people who beg on plurk for money for vet bills for their pets. if this does not apply to you, neither do any of my comments. i have no idea what else you're talking about here but you need to learn to read the comments you're replying to.
I'm guessing one of the things you still haven't been able to afford is friends if this is how you talk to people.
I don't think your bootstraps are up to your nipples yet either, so pull harder and give up the luxury of internet access until you can afford basic sympathy again.
i care about animal welfare. fuck you for putting yourself over something that depends on you for its life. get a pet that requires less commitment you handflapping moron.
