I think you're living in a very delusional place if you think it's just Keith shippers who like Sheith. Most of the Sheith fans on Tumblr prefer Shiro to Keith, and I've only seen one Shiro player in DWRP who doesn't like Sheith (many list it first in their preferences for what they'd like to play). That's not to say that it's everyone, but I really think you're misconstruing what's going on if you think it's some weird fantasy play.

Sheith also got more popular around here after S6 and S7 happened, because it became easier for Keith players to point out that they don't want to ship with Lance (and many of the ship-pushing Lances got tired of the show for not catering to them).

on one hand, i agree with how shiro fans and especially those of the tumblrina kind project on shiro and see him as a ~symbol of LGBT+ and disability~ that no one should ever be MEAN (read: not cater) to. and that's annoying as fuck because shiro may not be the deepest chara ever, but he ain't some weak baby woobie.

it honestly depends on where you run on Tumblr and in DWRP, because I have exactly the opposite experience.
i should add that there's the whole negative connotation involved with broganes and its association with klance fandom, and it may be why some keiths stay away from it

the problem with A03 (and this is for all fandoms and not just a voltron problem) is that tags can give you a general idea of what is popular but if you want exact numbers it's not reliable. people use every damn tag in the fic even if the character has only one line, and this is particularly awful for background ships. if someone writes "pair the spares" you'll get that ship in the background just because.
this is why, for example, i'm wary to judge the shallura fandom like another anon is doing in this thread. because i think most of the obnoxious ones were just klancers that wanted shallura to get shiro out of the way, and actual shallura fans don't give a fuck. (in my experience, anyway, maybe there were some assholes shalluras i didn't see)

yeah, but we're comparing two ships that feature the same character. i don't think klance can exist as a background ship in a sheith fic, or vice versa, anon.
i know, but they're background for other ships, that's the point. if you read stuff like hunk/shay, hunk/pidge, lotor/allura or allura/romelle, you will find one of those two to go along with them.

i agree with everything here, except that i've found more keith fans into sheith on tumblr. it's a younger crowd and he's more popular there than on dw.
For what it's worth anon, they weren't dating in the last season. They got together in the finale (presumably off screen sometime between Korra and Asami agreeing to go to the spirit world together, and the final scene where they're actually going), which is explained in interviews with the cast, and is also covered in the follow-up graphic novel, where they actually discuss their relationship and feelings in greater detail. No one knew they were together until they got back from their trip.
I do wish they could have had that in the series proper, but I also think the criticisms about the romantic in the first season are why they wanted to keep it subtle and make for a surprise reveal in the end instead.

honestly i loved the monitored network, because it meant people barely used it and focused more on logs. i forgot we had one half the time
i understand what you're saying but the skewing of the numbers is only marginally off, especially when the discrepancy between klance and sheith is as large as it is. i agree with your shallura take, btw. i've seen some assholish shallura shippers but they're very few; meanwhile there's a lot of klance shippers who use either shallura or shadam as a way to get rid of sheith.
the thing is that asami started out strong - she looked like the stereotypical vamp character that would betray the heros but in the end she choose what was right over her family and... then she was sort of there. in contrast sokka grew as his own character over the seasons and became stronger as he learned how to fight against benders as a non bender.
