i'm in my 40s and i haven't had any problems, although i'm vague about being older than average and don't mention my exact age. i know a couple of rpers around my age and older, there are way more than you think that are in their mid-late 30s, and there are tons of people who are pushing 30 around.
over half of the people i know including myself rped on lj and came over in the big move and are still actively rping in games.
the only thing i maybe do differently than average is specifically avoid playing or socializing with rpers under 18 and stick with the 25 and older crowd. i just am not comfortable rping with teens since i see them as kids and can't relate on an equal level.
see, just knowing that, even though it's not any of my business, helps a lot. it makes me feel better about it as my private options are drying up, since time constraints and life have changed the game some. to make matters worse, some of my friends offline treat me with disdain for enjoying online rping and like to tease me that it's childish to do or ask why i even bother anymore. thus the consideration to look into public games and dive in, but i'd much rather do some research first so not to step on toes.
the group i'm mainly with are longtime friends so we're all within the same age group, but the mod does invite new blood to the group from time to time and there's a new(er) player who is younger than us. i find it difficult to thread with them but i usually chalk it up to inexperience from playing (as i know i was not great at it either when i was that age), but they are fresh out of high school into college age wise. i'll play with anyone and give anyone a shot but they simply do not give me anything to work with or are very obviously only interested in playing whatever 'ooh shiny' thing that they have for that day.
