people are just upset because all of this was extremely jarring and disappointing to come across after The Missing, and even more so as he fails to correct meaningfully and posts stuff that's just doubling down, largely because of the reactionaries mentioned up thread (and in the comment below) getting in his ear and trying to tell him there's some kind of conspiracy against him

Your problem, as you just described it, is that people with no more influence than you or I, are swarming to... be nice to SWERY while telling him he's done nothing wrong, and that everyone who opposes him is a part of a faction in a foreign culture war he doesn't understand.

Your concern is that he will choose to listen to the people being nice to him, instead of independently researching g*mer history and trans culture.

You expect him to choose do the right thing because it's the right thing, but as you've laid out here, you are afraid that bad people being nice to him will cause him to choose to do bad things. Since in your eyes, he is such an easily-swayed man, the solution to me seems simple:

Instead of panicking that people with the wrong ideas are talking to him while *you* watch it happen but ultimately do nothing, couldn't you take initiative and also talk to this guy? Talk to him as nicely as they are while also debunking their claims?

I checked, and... oh dear. Anon, I don't know if you're american and that's why you're confused, but in most of the world criticizing an apology is considered the height of rudeness. Likewise, criticising him for "being defensive" and "centering himself" in the face of this rudeness, will also come across as rude and aggressive.

Especially strange since swery frequently communicates with Google Translate helping him so there's always going to be something weird and stilted in any of his english communication

he literally can't speak english. i went to see him at a panel and yes, everything was google translate. he did not understand what anyone was saying if they came up to him speaking english and would just kind of stare at them. imagine criticizing the "tone" of a person who can't speak more than a few words and has to use a translator.

it wasn't his tone. it was literally "i did the work, why are people still saying it's broken?" it wasn't even an apology, it was "i did the bare minimum, y'all should be grateful".

what's worse, he likely wouldn't have said any of that had some reactionary shitheads not spent the better part of the time since this all blew up convincing him he's being persecuted.

It was actually more like "wait, you want me to straight up not write characters with wrong opinions in my games? ever? I thought this could be resolved, but what you want isn't logical or desirable."

I never saw him asking for gratitude, and believe me, I went hunting for drama.

He's posted repeatedly throughout this (and months before) that anyone he doesn't know who tries to dm him gets an automatic block, they're for friends only. So yeah, that kind of goes against that, especially when she approached him.
