wankgate | 239: how does one become popular on dreamwidth rp?

it's weird because i would think gacha canons would be more likely to last for a while popularity-wise since they get a constant stream of new content whereas something like a movie or a one-season tv show is one and done, and even if they get a sequel there's usually a gap of a couple of years before the new installment comes out. gacha games get new stuff every month or two so it's easier to maintain interest.

but honestly like... i think you're almost certainly giving them too much benefit of the doubt. that doesn't mean that they're actually some kind of actively malicious person, but the way you're writing suggests they really did do a number on your self-perception. i'm getting the vibe that they may have done a lot of weird pass-agg negging while you were ostensibly close friends? while also not at all acknowledging times you went above and beyond for them? and somehow this is all your fault because you're "annoying"? you're hurt but literally all you can do is talk about how YOU suck??

it might do you some good to stop checking their twitter and stuff, though. i know there can be a weird blend of "just checking in" and spite-fueled fascination, but you're just letting someone who wasn't good to you take up even more of your time and energy. it's not worth it.

i'm glad that you were able to move past a toxic friendship, anon! past you deserves some credit for realizing that this wasn't someone you should try to go chasing after.

Gacha encourages the feeling of chasing new shinies, since you'll get a new character who is prettier/better/hotter/etc than the last one for a limited period of time. Usually characters aren't also that deep, so a lot of it is simply just how thirsty you are for that character. That's how I feel at least.

So here's the thing—I gave you the benefit of the doubt for a whole year because you were fun to bounce off of when things were good, we had interests in common, and also because I was trying to make sure peace was upheld OOC in a love triangle situation IC where I could tell you were sensitive about whether you felt included. I like making people feel included!

I also liked being your friend! I liked giving you homework help since mentoring in my field of expertise is fun, and I liked talking about how work was going and what your pets were up to and coming up with cool outfit ideas for our characters. Stuff was kind of tough for you for a while but, hey, what are friends for?

So I kind of didn't expect you to ghost me on both RP plans and plurk after kind of angling to monopolize the love triangle situation above, and then also imply that everyone you cut from plurk (including the other person in the ship??? who had the patience of a saint?????) was toxic because... other people in game complained about the fact that you're hard to work with and out-of-character brusque, needy, and kind of mean sometimes, and you assumed that the people closest to you betrayed you for some reason???????

Real talk: please get help for your deep-seated anxiety and paranoia issues! They are not doing you any favors and I suspect that you will eventually explode the group you are closest to right now also like you have done with literally every group you've been in for the last few years! Also consider like, displaying reciprocity for your friendships? Hope you're having fun with doing that homework on your own that you needed all that handholding through!!!

i guess it depends on the gacha because the ones i play have fairly extensive lore and character relationships. i actually don't rp from them because i don't want to have to try to keep all of the lore straight when it's constantly being added to.

you're a sweet person anon and i appreciate it but please trust that i was annoying for real. imagine if you were a naruto fan and i was your friend and the only thing i knew about japan at all was whatever you told me about naruto. over the course of our friendship i kept apologizing for liking some american thing that wasnt as good as authentic japanese things like you like. like for real on the level of i finally tried instant ramen and told you apologetically that it wasn't as good as the chicken noodle soup i make from scratch. and now imagine that i usually hold myself out as being very sophisticated and intelligent.

as far as above and beyond goes, oh yeah, i did do that, but also i did say "no thanks needed" over and over again.

you're right that i should stop dwelling on this person. at least because of this discussion and your kind advice i think i know why i'm so stuck on them. i wouldn't say why on wankgate, because the most cursed womanchildren cackle here side by side with the gossip-loving angels, but all the same an answer exists.

yeah i think joseimuke properties such as ensemble stars and twisted wonderland have thousands and thousands of text surrounding their characters and the world they live in, which explains how they both bring in billions of yen every month.

it cant be that they are boring or off-putting. its gotta be that dwrp is full of flaky idiots who are obsessed with the New Shinies or that they hate female characters. it has to be somebody else's fault

look at bakerstreet though. that star wars musedumper has been at for years. and there's a good chunk of mcus or other video game muns who have played the same character for a while.

it's the constant stream of new content that makes them so flaky. remember when hypmic was popular and dropped off?

it's not just genshin, its also granblue, identity v, etc. people might play the latest new shiny genshin character for a month but they always tend to flake. they always "voicetest" but never actually rp them and they tend to drop threads.

As a casual enstars fan I would never RP from it because there is way too much to read for any given character.

I think it depends on whether the game bases its gacha on new characters (like Genshin) or new cards of existing characters (enstars, twisted wonderland). Games like Genshin are always expanding their cast, so you naturally get less content for older characters once their newness has worn off, though they may come back for events here and there. Enstars/TW on the other hand are building up the lore of their existing characters with every new event or card story because they rarely if ever add new characters.

Tbf I think hypmic fell off because iirc it doesn’t have an official EN translation for the app? And so the anime held about as much attention as any one season anime does.

very weird assertion to make when genshin has been out for a year and a half now and most of the characters people tend to play are the ones that have been in the game since it released

sorry a genshin apped to your game and got the tags you felt you deserved but there's an easy solution to that problem. it's called tagging out.

hypmic is legitimately difficult to rp from because of how much lore and info sometimes just goes without being said/translated.

if the anime gets a second season/manga gets a legitimate translation i can see it coming back in the RP space, but beyond that, probably going to stay dormant.
