nah. people wildly overstate whst is needed to get traction in dwrp. if your character is decently known, you are 70% there.

you don't even need to play a recognizable character. one of my most icly popular characters came from a 10+ year old obscure video game.

playing a recognizable character definitely helps but it isn't necessary

Re: So...

Stop trying to be popular.

Seriously, the most popular people on dw arent the ones trying to manipulate people into loving them. A lot of them are genuinely nice and have a lot of friends. Those friends want to play with them and follow them around.

There's a darksided way to get to the same result, but those people don't deserve to be imitated. Just be good to people and drop the ulterior motive. People will always be able to tell when you're trying too hard, and that's offputting.

That's so untrue I'm thinking this is probably bait.

Yeah, they're asking for $3000 to cover half of their dream wedding. That's why it's so tacky. If you can't afford a big wedding, there are plenty of options out there. Begging for your dream wedding is tacky.

Thank you, you get where I'm coming from. I'm a married RPer and I would never have dreamed of asking anyone else to chip in. My partner and I had the wedding we could afford without begging for help or racking up huge credit card bills.

That's why I'm saying that the plurk starter can get married now, if it's so important for them to be together ASAP, and have a party when they can save up for it.

yeah, you can definitely skip or compensate one element of the 'recipe,' if you hustle. i honestly think the most important ingredient is proactivity. put yourself out there. keep in touch. ask and tag threads consistently. come up with actual ideas. don't outright suck.

that's kind of it. so many anons like to pretend dwrp popularity is reserved for popular ship shippers, sons of shakespeare, ass kissers or friends of the mods, and it really isn't that deep. those things can help, but you don't need them. if you're failing to get any kind of traction at all on a site where we consistently see people grateful to not get their 100000th thread dropped, then yeah, you're probably the problem.

Re: So...

you can in fact buy popularity, im happy to report. if you thread with someone with a bunch of friends for three tags and buy them a paid/icons with a note saying "i loved our thread! sorry i couldn't finish it!" you have at least a six month Friend subscription. once you have a few of these, they start making their friends into your friends. throw in a commission or two and you're golden. really would not take more than $50-75.

+1 the more you just roll over and let other people ask you to be the witness to their character's angst/to ship your canon character with their self-insert/go along with a castmate's headcanons instead of acting on your own interpretation, the more "popular" you'll be. Have fun!

Re: -1

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
the question is "how to be popular" not "how to make real, deep, enduring friendships."

otoh not only have i personally done this and had it work, it worked so well that within a few months i had a group of people i went to cons with for years

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
reasons why i always roll up my eyes at all the sob stories on rpanons WEH WHY WON'T ANYONE TAG ME WEH I'M ALWAYS DROPPED

people refuse to recognize that they may, in fact, be part of the problem and a million anons rush in to pat their ass like oh no, poor baby, when a lot of the time OP is leaving out key context or straight up lying about the situation to garner sympathy instead of actually reflecting

which yeah, it's the internet, that's what people do, but you can practically time your watch to this now and it's pathetic

Re: So...

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
it's not worth it. people made up wank about me because they were jealous i was "popular".

Re: worst cast you ever joined

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
No one was ever shitty to me or my character personally, but it's fucking weird to remember being in a Hetalia cast and multiple people getting booted because of insensitivity to IRL issues & nationalities

Which I realize is pretty par for the course when it comes to Hetalia. It was a weird time.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I know this is a meme, but for real, the last time I modded there was so much bullshit and infighting with the game's star wars cast. I guess it's to be expected with a fandom that's been around for 50+ years and everyone hates everything, but jesus some of them are nuts.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
the sequels made it ten times worse tbqh

reylos are fucking insane and have basically hijacked the fandom, good luck finding a cast anymore that doesn't have a pair of these players who basically use the game as their personal sandbox and ignore everyone else unless they can provide shippy fuel for their dumb drama

i've also run into some weird anakin players, though i guess that shouldn't be surprising either given the character

Re: worst cast you ever joined

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
can only manage how cringey they'd be today given current world events

Re: So...

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
based on my observations it helps to be really active in game threads and funny/exciting in ooc interactions. also helps if you plurk about your game threads and cr a lot. having a shippable character is also a big plus but not always necessary.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
it's impressive that reylos are bad, *and* anti-reylos are bad, so you really can't escape it lmao

all anakin players are weird. look at the character they like.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-11 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm about to blow your mind with some knowledge, anon.

OCs tag other OCs all the time.

In fact when I do play any of my OCs I prefer to tag other OCs over canon characters.
