as a trans person, i find a lot of trans headcanons weird and fetishy or just not supported by canon at all

i spend a lot of time on tumblr and the general school of thought seems to be that they need no justification, so i think this phenomenon is probably coming from that direction (especially considering the fetishistic nature of these headcanons because oh lord). but that doesn't really fly here and people should know that

like, do i wish there were more trans characters? yes, but artificially pasting this experience (and there's no singular Trans Experience, mind) onto some random character and REALLY emphasizing things like their agab, body shape, surgery scars, etc. and brining it up randomly and frequently ain't it

I've always hated this too. Like the gratuitous ugly top surgery scars artists will put on every single character... Makes me feel bad about my own :( I wish they would do this less, it feels so fetishy.

this is the absolute worst and i'm sorry they've made you feel bad, anon. i'm pre-op (still waiting on a consult, fuck you covid) and while i was debating whether i wanted top surgery at all, this actually scared me off a little. plus it's like, wow, is this how cis people see us? it's all really bizarre and harmful and i wish it would stop, but that shit's a minefield

I would say it's still worth it anon. It's all up to your size and weight and the healing process and all three of those things kind of f'ed it up for me. I still wouldn't change it for the world, but I'm definitely wondering if I should look into something that will lighten the scar coloring at least (hair doesn't grow there so it's... obvious.) Everyone has a different result so don't let my story keep you from it!

I feel the same way about it being harmful and weird, especially when before my surgery it wasn't as prevalent in fandom stuff. I actively avoid trans headcanon people because of this and... feelsbadman. Always seems like it's cis artists too, or trans/nb people who aren't actually needing/wanting top surgery. They could come up with better ways to show a character is trans. Or, better, don't bring attention to it at all because why?

Worst I've seen is two trans guys licking each others scars and shit like... It's so obvious the people drawing this stuff (or writing it) have never been through it and don't plan to.

i'm going through with it, trust me, my tits are enormous and i can't live like this

i've also seen the scar-licking a few times which is EXTREMELY creepy. i think in rare cases it's trans people who are dealing with a lot of internalized bullshit who are drawing this stuff but yeah, in large part it's cis artists with a kink or who are otherwise doing it for clout, which imo is just as bad

Re: worst headcanon

(Anonymous) 2022-02-19 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
oh same :( it feels especially gross and fetishy when it's a canon that has stuff like magic or a level of technology that would be able to remove or at least disguise scars like that.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-19 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? I know most people dislike r63 stuff because people say it's transphobic but I much prefer doing that (wish fulfillment stuff) over giving a character trans baggage. I have enough of that on my own haha.

And like you said if it's a high tech/magic world I would absolutely want my "surgeries" to go perfectly without scarring or pain or anything like that.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-19 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
exactly, that's half the fun of high-tech/magic worlds! you can write a character transitioning without having to go through all of that stuff. i know i sure as hell would choose that option if i could.

there's a movie with michelle rodriguez and sigourney weaver where they force a sex change on a hitman as retaliation for killing the surgeon's brother. it's... yeah. it's a thing.

the assignment, if anyone's wondering of the name.

or they're from a historical canon where top surgery or hormones aren't possible and somehow they've totally medically transitioned because drawing men with boobs gets you cancelled on twitter

And none of them remember/acknowledge that there's not an insignificant number of completely cis guys that have top surgery scars too - they're not the magic signifier key of 'this person is trans' like Those Fanartists seem to think.

i ran into a fanartist on tumblr who headcanoned a character on trans and i got tired of them bringing up their trans headcanon all the time, mainly because the only way they brought it up was through the character mentioning his aching ribs which delayed his top surgery by a month. not picking out a new name, not dealing with hormones, just that one time he fucked up his ribs and had to have his top surgery delayed because of it.

the literal only way, all the time. he could be getting burgers with his friends and he's like 'yeah wow i couldn't eat burgers that one time i hurt my ribs and had to have my top surgery delayed'

this is so dumb but ime this is a weird number of people. the same ones seem to be obsessed with binding as an aesthetic and the pain/discomfort that can cause

I especially hate the transmasc headcanons that feels like an excuse for mpreg - like just owe up you got an mpreg fetish, guys.

yep, this is one of the specific things i was thinking of. like just go back to your badly-drawn yaoi and self-lubricating assholes of yore

Re: worst headcanon

Any headcanon that affects gender identity/sexuality in some way is something I end up scrutinizing almost immediately because of this.

Like you can make your character gay/straight/ace/trans/cis/nb/etc without canon supporting it and that's fine to me. But when you use it to project, fetishize and attack people, or as a therapy outlet, that's when I bow out. No one's got time to deal with people frothing in the mouth over their own issues.

ngl pretty much every trans person smut fic I've seen has been so fetishy about their bodies I skip any fic with a trans tag just because odds are it's a weird fetish thing about a Guy With Girl Parts Having Sex. I know smut is often fetishy but certain things feel more sort of othering than others if that even makes sense? I can count on one hand the fic I've seen that actually seemed well done on the topic and didn't make me think the author had a huge trans kink.

frankly I respect the writers/artists who outright admit they're writing futanari/herm/etc more - least they're honest it's a sex fantasy for them.

+1

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
tbh as a trans person i would much rather interact with one of those people because they're honest about what they're in it for and aren't trying to dress it up as "representation."

op

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
honestly same, at least i know what these people are about and that they're not doing it to score woke points

also trans and tbh would like to have fun writing characters of any body type without having randos crawl up my ass about how I'm fetishizing myself

Seriously. I'll take fun feminisation/cuntboy stuff over uwu trans boi stuff any day.

+1 i've blocked the relevant tag in fandoms where this is common. it's weird and uncomfortable to see people insist they're writing it ~respectfully~ because they used the trans character tag but when you actually read it it just comes off like they wanted to write a/b/o without the rapey overtones

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
i actually like a/b/o depending on how the world is built - some of that comes off as trans fetish too if they're big up on afab omega bodies which is starting to be a thing...but if we're just talking about people emitting pheromones and having dramatic sex in public i'm there for it

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
oh yeah i absolutely know what you mean, i don't read these anymore either because i've only ever found a handful that didn't make it weird
