239: how does one become popular on dreamwidth rp?

Not a peeve, but mostly a question. What would an ideal Bakerstreet look like to you all?

We often talk about it in terms of taking something away (players, memes, habits), but if we were to rebuild meme culture and start from scratch, what would you want from it?

probably would say no empty top levels. I feel like if you make people write base starters play is just more likely to occur.

This is probably an unpopular opinion but I've always thought a meme with some sort of loose continuity would be nice. Something like the dressing rooms of old. You have a general world set up that is up each month in the same universe, there's no obligation to tag but you can check in once in a while and tag as though you're just continuing another day there.

I considered doing this before but it felt like it was hard to integrate in bs culture, but I guess I can always just make a comm and link a new post monthly and see where that goes.

yeah this is what i do, every time i have someone i rp with on a semi-regular basis. this is how i end up with long-running psls from strangers in bakerstreet.

This was done and was fairly successful with a Bakerstreet Jamjar Meme that was pretty fun, but the creator a) lost interest in posting it regularly and b) went poo poo in their diapies if anyone else did too.

comm + monthly post crosslinked to bs could work pretty well. i know there were some single fandom dressing rooms on dreamwidth that got a decent amount of attention with that general format. (as in made semi-recently, not dressing rooms back from 2002 on lj old.)

the main problem those dressing rooms had were that they were single fandom, usually had a central clique powering it, and once the central clique lost interest in that fandom they promptly died. but that's where the crossposting to bs thing comes in, so.

it's been done, it didn't work, it won't work this time. every time someone decides to "fix bakerstreet" or "fix memes" their ideas get interest for maybe a month or two and then everyone just wanders back to tfln. there's an entire comm dedicated to memes which require top levels for instance (

toplvl) and hardly anyone uses it

the community just needs to make peace with the idea that this is what people want and this is how things are now

maybe it's actually not about "fixing bakerstreet"

maybe it's just that that anon wants to try something, and if they want to write memes/mod then why not let them try instead of immediately shitting your pants about how it's going to automatically fail. who gives a fuck if it does fail? all that'll happen if it fails is prospective modanon will lose however long of their life it took to write a meme or three, and wankgate will bitch about it for a couple of months before they lose interest again.

by your logic the community should never try anything if it failed once, because it'll fail again, because the status quo will remain forever and ever lol tastes never change.

go ahead and try to change something then, we'll see you back here in a month when it doesn't do anything

I'd rather these people put their free time where their mouth is and actually try something than just sit here and bitch endlessly about what the bkst mods "should" be doing

i don't have the time, energy or personality for this, but my ideal meme comm would have a loose setting like "city that matches your world and you can travel in and out of" and then whatever meme prompts like sex mushrooms or w/e would have the city did a thing explanation, and characters could have a continuity within the comm and i could stop stressing about assumed CR

well i would want memes that aren't 98% shippy and fluffy but that would require a playerbase that wasn't 98% shipping and fluff addicts

the "reee" thing originated as (and tbh, still is) an insult to autistic people, putting on an exaggerated affect of an autstic fit.

it's basically the same as flopping your hands against your chest and talking like you have down syndrome. it's meant to imply the person you're imitating/insulting is autistic.
