I loaded this up thinking it was going to link to a mod Q&A or something. This is very much not that.

Is this person one of the mods or something? Is it a rando player trying to mod from the backseat? I don't play in this game and I'm confused about what is happening here.

Re: GAME PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
they're not a mod of the game. the player compiled the questions into a post bec people were having difficulty piecing together what's going on and which questions have been asked by other players.

i don't think it's modding from the backseat, it's a handy reference to see which info is known to whom because a lot of people ask questions and not everyone may have been going thru the post looking at questions.

but this is a good faith take on this situation so nobody probably cares.

da, but you're probably exactly right, but wg brainworms makes people leap to nasty conclusions, even if those conclusions are a hell of a lot less likely than someone just wanting to be helpful and compiling all the data so far.

Re: GAME PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
they're not a mod, from what i can tell, and that's actually kind of the problem

i don't doubt the player was trying to be helpful, but doing an extended write-up like this sets a bad precedent and makes it seems like this person is a mod liason and that they can be approached in a mod capacity and asked mod questions when they are not actually a mod

at the very least, they probably should've asked permission first, as this is something the mod team should've been looped into beforehand and not after so they didn't wind up disseminating incorrect information, misrepresenting mod stances, looking like a mod favorite, etc.

put in that context, "you beat us to it!" was likely their gentle way of saying "please don't do this on your own again"

tl;dr good intention, bad execution, not the best look for this player because i can see how it reads like backseat modding

damn we are grasping at straws here

Re: GAME PET PEEVES

i think this is a stretch. this is clearly an enthusiastic player who wants to make sense of the event and figured they could help the other players out in the process.

i HIGHLY doubt the mods were actually going to do the same to compile all this information. it took people calling them out on an anon comm to put up a locations post, to add more substance to their ic events, and then they had to be asked by multiple people (after already saying no) to put up an ooc plotting post for the new event.

i think this looks bad on the mods more than anything. that they aren't very proactive on their own plus the fact that they've scattered so much information everywhere, led to a player taking matters into their own hands.

anon is reaching, but "this only happened because the mods are bad, actually" is also reaching.

Not every game needs the mods to hold their hand through everything. These kinds of info shares and collections are normal in other games.

I have never seen one. What games are you playing in

Re: GAME PET PEEVES

Several different games that had these kinds of investigations? Especially ones slightly smaller than this usually have the mods on the back burner unless they're answering questions. The players do all the organization, the posts, the town halls, etc, usually with a pretty good discord component which this game now also has.

If you're used to big games where the mods structure everything, that's fine. But it's not the only way to do things and it doesn't mean the player has done something untoward.

+1 i've seen things like this done before by proactive players

tbh i'm not even in the game and i appreciate this player and don't think less of the mods. if i was a mod i would just take it to heart 1) players are excited and engaged enough in what i'm doing to put the time and energy into this and 2) going forward, i should do the same and compile info posts, since everyone seemed to like and appreciate it

like, this is a good thing on display and isn't anything worth complaining about (at this stage)

+1 I've seen players do this both IC and OOC in small and big games

didn't Deerington have an entire PDF document created by the players to figure things out? I know I've seen "smart" characters compile things like this ICly as well to hand to newbie characters as a sort of catch up on current events

I’ve seen it in my games, too. The player we’re talking about was actually in one of them.

Re: GAME PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2022-04-07 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
honest question, do you think the mods' job is to handhold everyone through everything, ic and ooc? proactivity is good. this was helpful.

it's kinda sad that ppl squint at something as innocuous as a plotting post on the ooc com because it "makes them look like a mod liaison" lmao. maybe i'm old, but we used to do this shit all the time back in the day.

Re: GAME PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2022-04-07 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
If this is how people react when a player is proactive ooc, imagine how people will act when they’re proactive ic and start getting results.

This is why no one wants to do anything in games and this is why nothing gets done in games without mods spoon feeding everyone plot like babies.

Re: GAME PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
it's a compilation of info because the mods want players to ask questions to get plot instead of including it in the log post.

Re: GAME PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2022-04-07 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
you have to know how a comment like this translates to "please feed me all the plot, i don't want to be proactive, i just want to react to things mods write", right?

Re: GAME PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
lol @ everyone going PRAISE! BLESS! A GOD! when this is like 3 paragraphs of information that would be better and more in-depth if compiled by the actual mods themselves

i expected some huge write-up, not two short lists and a few sentences. if people were struggling to find that in a dedicated q&a post so badly that they felt the need to compile it instead of waiting for the mods to deliver an official summary then the players just sound dense af

Re: GAME PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
the info is scattered across 4 posts.

Re: GAME PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2022-04-07 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
also, mods can literally still do a big writeup if they want and were planning to. it's not like they can't? threads are still going and questions are still asked so i can see them waiting a minute.

Re: GAME PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2022-04-07 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
da, the mods already added an important question that went up while the post was being put together, tbh they seem fine just adding stuff to the existing post.

there's definitely a timing factor to consider, like when is too soon (or too late) to do a post like this, and that's really hard to figure, but it feels like pure wankgate brainworms to see all of this and read it as wank (if not outright headcanoning) on the part of the player OR the mods.

the player didn't do anything wrong. neither did the mods. neither of them seem bothered by what the other is doing. people are making up scenarios in their heads where this is somehow drama.
