shit, i didn't mean for it to sound like that at all, anon. it's a genuine question and an important health distinction (if you are a trans man who was born female you still need to go for pap checkups, no?)

bah. i hope this wording isn't as piss poor as my previous comment.

if you're afab (assigned female at birth) then yes you do need to go to pap smears and everything. not every trans or non-binary person uses or likes the terms afab/amab but they're useful shorthand to talk about people who have certain sets of reproductive organs (in this case because the discussion is about period products).

what exactly are you confused about here?

In addition to the above anon statement, afab/amab is used precisely *because* "man/woman" doesn't apply to biology. Some men have periods because their physiology at birth involved biologically female anatomy. So "afab" is an attempt to include them without discounting their gender identity in these discussions.

the issue is that it's bullshit phrasing, anon. for a non inflammatory comparison think about the term "men who have sex with men", which crops up when health issues affect the gay community. it's phrased that way because a lot of guys who fuck guys will not admit to being gay or bisexual, they won't respond to something phrased in that way, they will not receive necessary care and health info

so when you talk about health issues as being for "females" or "biological females" or some other shit, you immediately lose a huge chunk of trans ppl. who won't show up for whatever reason, even if it's just that they don't want to walk in looking in every way like a dude and say hi, i'm here for a pap smear. people have been turned away for that, they've been denied care because medical receptionists short circuit when confronted with trans folk

it really is neater in every way to specify who you're talking about, i personally have no issues with "people with uteruses" etc, but "women and other people with uteruses" etc works as a compromise. but we can't have nice things because inclusive language is The Woman Erasure or some fucking shit

i work in population health, this is exactly the reason. it's not to "erase the wimminz" or to be "woke," it's to make sure people get the care they need. also applies to post-transition bodies - a trans woman who has taken estrogen for 5+ years still needs a mammogram at age 40+, for example, even though she is "amab."
