idk if it's just my bad luck or what but every game I've modded or been a helper for has had at least one player come in and try to app the most batshit nuts character concept known to man. sometimes it feels like they read the faq and deliberately try to hit every edge case scenario I never thought to cover.

I'm talking things like "one million telepathic worms in a person suit" or "ten foot tall eldritch monster that can only feed on the flesh of a living human it trapped in a time loop and is will die if anyone attempts to communicate with it via text". concepts that they inevitably need to ask 50 questions about just to make them work in the setting and then 50 more every time the mods write an event that didn't account for One Million Worms Man.

nayrt but if you have ever been a DM or game mod you understand that the problem with the edge case guys is that there are 50 blond superhero twunks, and then your special little worm king. the mod now has to deliver a satisfying experience for both sets of guys. it is less easy than it would otherwise be.

sometimes the worm king bit does come off as personal. sometimes it really does feel like the player has a personal beef with some aspect of their life that is coming out in the worm king, and theyre essentially asking the mod to create them a custom form of gratification or satisfaction specific to the thing they're beefing about.

if you play worm kings and you want to get in here and scream at me about how youre not like that, it is easy to prove me wrong: just tell me that you are the kind of player who apps a worm king and is affirmatively, without being asked, ready to communicate to the mods something along the lines of "the worm thing is not important and i will not be trying to use it to get around aspects of the game world that i don't like."

I love playing weird character concepts in games but only if I can make them work in game. If your thoughts aren’t ‘how can i adapt to the game’ don’t app. Simple as that. As a mod if someone came to me with something on the surface unworkable with suggestions about how to make them fit or even just acknowledging the issues I’ll work with the player.

If someone apps something unworkable and expects me to fix it, fuck ‘em.

Works in reverse too. No need to hobble players who put the effort in. If the setting has a green sun for aesthetics and someone apps Superman, I’m not going to say he’s powerless in the setting.

a shitty superhero game mod would do something wanky like deny an app based on the number of friends they have

its true. i went to your plurk and looked at the friend count. not satisfied with that, i asked around, got your real name, and looked you up on facebook and linkedin. even though you had only 3 friends between all of these sites, i went even further. maybe you have real life friends. so i went to your town, talked to the people in the area, tried to find out about you. what youre really like. i talked to your parents, your boss.

even this was not enough. i went to heaven and to hell and to middle earth and vulcan, to ask the angels and demons and all the gods i could find whether you had any supernatural friends. a vampire, a pixie, nuSpock, anything. i met the buddha, and he said you contained the knowledge of the void, but only the social void. i met christ, and he said he didnt know you. i met ahura mazda and we had sex and i forgot to ask about you.

even this was not enough. i put out an all points bulletin across the universe to see if you had even any alien friends. in the entire universe, not a single species evinced the least interest in you, much less affection.

even then, even after all this, it was not enough. i had to draw upon all the strength of god, anime, and the scientific method. and anon, let me tell you, i found out: you really do have millions and millions of friends, billions of friends! all in your microbiome, digesting merrily and lovingly all the media and food you consume, and turning it into the shit tags.

i once apped a character with ridiculously op powers to a game without power nerfing. the very first thing i said in my app was "if you ever need me to tone down any of these powers at any time, just let me know." i never used the powers to do anything significant without clearing it with the mods to be sure that it was okay and that i wasn't going to be somehow breaking the setting. when i asked if my character could use his powers to do things, i always anticipated being told 'no.'

amazingly, i managed to play this character for the entire duration of the game without causing any sort of issues.

so clearly the answer is to constantly beg for mod permission to play your own character as apped and approved

yes this definitely improves the quality of games, i can see it now

next up is begging mod approval every time you have to take a shit

also terrible: "worm king is very special, too special for this plot that everyone else is having fun with. i don't have a single idea of something fun and satisfying he could do because there are no options tailor-made for me to show off his specialness. why didn't you write a plot based around me showing off his specialness? every plot going forward should have me and my edge case in mind first and foremost so that i don't have to expend energy on coming up with things to do myself."

both terrible options are probably less than 10% of ocs, yet they're so disproportionately aggravating that when i modded i had a period of time where i felt like 'why do we allow ocs'

(the real trick is to just be more liberal with app rejections and emphasize suitability in apps)
