considering the player posted on plurk about learning from this mistake and not wanting it to get to wankgate, if you're friends with them you're not doing them any favors anon

they did something they shouldn't have done and owned up to it, the mods actually handled it sensitively and tried to preserve the players feelings. this isn't a gotcha.

judging by this comment i'd say they come off less as a fetishist and more just...kind of dense?

not someone i'd trust to handle the issue with any sensitivity, and their defensive "i have never been anything but an ally to the queer community" reply makes me want them in the game even less, so imo the mods made the right call

the player is constantly inappropriate in her behavior and she's had apps rejected before for her poor handling of this exact issue so it's not like she hasn't been told

it might be a fetish but it might also just be part of her being completely inconsiderate, obtuse and tone deaf to everyone and everything around her

Honest question. Trying not to get this thread frozen and I know Google is right there, but is hermaphrodite really a slur? I thought that was the legitimate scientific term. It is used widely in medical texts and has been for years.

Is this an instance of modern language and individual views on words and their collective meanings and societal reactions to them changing? Basically, the community it's used for no longer abides by the word. Sort of like the whole "queer" debate.

It's largely considered outdated and has been replaced by intersex by the medical community and by chunks of the queer community. Under the old definitions, a hermaphrodite is someone with male and female sex organs. But since people can express various combinations of male and female biological bits, well. You see how things can get tangled.

For the queer community, there's some people who stick to it and others who find it offensive. There's some people who stick with it even though it's a slur because it's what they're used to, some people who find it empowering, and a lot of folks who reject it because it's so narrow and leads to misunderstandings as to what their situation might be.

For medicine, it's considered misleading and overly narrow, requiring a lot of tacked on language to cover each type (for example, a male pseudohermaphrodite, true hermaphrodites, etc.) and our understanding of genetics and the way they're expressed has grown enough that the original definition just plain don't work.

iirc it's like- talking about say flowers is one thing, talking about people is another. A plant species can be hermaphroditic, a person is intersex.

Intersex is used in medicine when talking about humans, generally speaking. Hermaphroditism is mostly now just a genetic term for discussing things like plants and some species of animal such as snail. It has a specific and technical meaning.

you'll see the term in general biology texts referring to snails, earthworms, etc because a single individual is capable of producing male and female gametes that are used for sexual reproduction. it's still appropriate for those species, but it's not an appropriate term for humans.

from wikipedia: "This language has fallen out of favor due to misconceptions and pejorative connotations associated with the terms, and also a shift to nomenclature based on genetics."

I think this is also confusing because "hermaphrodite" is still a correct descriptive term for certain animals like earthworms, and is in this sense a legitimate scientific term.

That’s Mina’s terrible Kainé, isn’t it? Why I’m not surprised to see her refer to this intersexed character as a slur. She’s as braindead as they come, especially since she goes out of her way to fetishize everything about Kainé.

Exactly my read too. I'm also super uncomfortable with forced femme (though consensual genderplay is fine by me) and there was absolutely nothing in their description of the character that even got close to that, UNLESS they're coming in with the default view that Kaine isn't really female, which seemed to kind of underlie all those words.
