ayrt

I guess I have run into a lot of really bad self-projection when it comes to gender stuff that I haven't encountered as much or at all with hc related to other things. I'm sure plenty of people could play it well, but I've never seen someone attach a gender headcanon to a cis character that didn't either make it fetish-y or so self insert-y that the character turned into a walking tumblr post. Maybe there is just a specific type of player who is comfortable with doing this in games I keep seeing.

I've been in more than one game where pride month will roll around in america and people will have their characters do big pride network posts and explain things ICly about gender and queerness and it's the main reason why I DNI with trans hcs. For some reason people playing canon trans characters seems to be done more tactfully, but I would guess it's because their canons have given them a personality and character traits beyond "transness" because the entire idea of making a character trans just to make them "more interesting" is just a bad look all around. I get that binary stories have been told a lot, but I dunno, in my opinion it's just as weird to change a cis person's gender identity for fun as it would be to change a trans person's identity for fun.

Fortunately most people won't have be offended that I don't want to interact with their trans hcs because I think we can all agree it doesn't have any place in games. What people get up to on their own in private RP is their business and I don't judge them for it no matter what they're into.

other anon from this thread who refuses to interact with trans headcanons and yes, all of this is exactly why. i haven't had a problem with people playing canon trans characters or trans ocs (outside of a single person's trans ocs) because they actually tend to treat them as characters who just happen to be trans rather than a walking ball of gender issues.

it's not that i don't want to interact with trans characters (that would be pretty hypocritical when i'm not cis myself), it's that i don't want gender stuff in the thing i do for fun which is a place where i don't have to deal with the gender stuff that is a part of my daily existence and can just choose to play a cis character if i want. a trans character who is happy and comfortable with themselves and their gender identity and presentation? cool, bring them on, i'll happily tag them. a trans character where 90% of their personality is GENDER? no thanks. and ime trans hcs almost always end up being that.

oh i hate those pride posts, and i say that as a queer person. i ignore them now because it's rare they're anything but player soapboxing.

once had a character from a setting where nobody had ever been discriminated against for their sexuality or gender say they didn't personally see the point in it and why, hoping to get some interesting discussion going about characters' experiences and for this character to learn why others did think it mattered. nope. character just gets called bigoted for not having a 21st century us liberal worldview. if you want to do anything other than hold a standard pride parade in your fantasy/horror/otherwise spooky jamjar you are Wrong.

90 degree turn away from the topic but I’ve never seen any of those and wish it wasn’t fishing to ask for links, or at least games. I’d love a little cringe right now.
