i wouldn't have given a canned response in the first place. i would've said exactly why they were banned. so i'm guessing the player would've had the chance to immediately clarify the situation.

I've done a lot of assistant moderating and known a lot of head moderators and this doesn't seem to be a common take! People always say they can't share any details with the people who are being complained about so they act on a he said basis instead of hearing both sides.

that's because in a lot of cases the banned player has a history of bad behavior so repugnant that the head moderator doesn't feel the need to hear "both sides"

banning doesn't really happen as often as some of the anons here seem to think. unless the head mod is a rank EX dipstick like trek or gsai you really have to try to eat a ban from a dwrp game

it happens most often when the mods are friends with someone who really hates one person for whatever reason i've found. one of my friends moderated at a game where there was a ban list made up of players who the other mods and their friends hated who hadn't ever really done anything wrong.

not saying mods shouldn't be able to do that but i am saying i know of several bans that happened because x mod friend didn't like y player. these players are usually complete no bodies who simply find other games to play in so it never blows up.

tbh this is why i set my expectations of getting in a game very low AND start shopping for a second or third game in case my first choice is a miss. A lot of players here have been around for more than a decade and I wouldn't be surprised if they have at least one or two randos who hate them for the arbitrary reason of 'said something i didn't like in plurk' or something.

i think i'd still get annoyed if i was banned when i don't know who the mods are, just like some plurk blocks are annoying. however, i won't make it the centerpiece of my personality and just move on.

i think the dumbest reason i ever knew someone to be banned for was "they didn't like my oc". they received the usual "we've had player complaints" response. so yeah, it's best not to take it personally because there absolutely are stupid reasons behind the scenes why players who have never done anything truly bad get banned. you don't hear about these bans much because reasonable people really do just move on like you said.

Having been a mod and knowing a few other mods who run different games, I can safely say a few of us will ban for whatever reason we feel like, including close friends not liking someone.

Which is our right, because these are our games. If I want to ban someone I or my friends find annoying we’ve got every right, even if they’re harmless. Most games are invite only for a reason these days.

that's fair but it does mean that being banned from a game isn't a red flag when taken alone. people can and do get banned just because the mods are friends with someone who really dislikes a player. it's why i always take it with a grain of salt if i hear about bans through the grapevine unless the player threw a public fit about it.

+1

not only does it cover your own ass, it gives the banned player a chance to understand exactly what behavior of theirs led to the ban so that they can work on improving themselves if they choose to do so.
