nerds are usually "unattractive" because they were the weird kid growing up and WHY they were the weird kid growing up is because they didn't conform to trends like keeping up with their hair, clothes, social etiquette, etc. whether it's because they didn't notice or didn't care about those things varies by person.

that leads to an adult who also doesn't know/care about societal expectations of "attractiveness" such as being in shape (sedentary lifestyle/eating habits associated with nerd activities), caring about fashion trends, and maintaining hygiene (not just showering but haircare, skincare, body hair if they're interested in that.) GENERALLY if someone was born and raised a weird kid or a nerd, they don't prioritize those things, and the people they befriend are likely also in the same camp. if they were more interested in getting in shape, getting hair done, doing makeup, shopping/fashion, chances are that they wouldn't fall into the nerd category.

ofc there are exceptions but generally that's the reason.

ALSO if they become interested in these things later in life, they'll be behind on the knowledge/experience that comes with, say, haircare, and that's why the nerds with dyed hair usually have frizzy, washed out blue/green/pink, because they don't care enough to keep up with it and don't know how to properly style/care for it. or their makeup will be bright colors/unflattering because they haven't had years of experience applying it. it's basically like they're at the experience level of a 12 year old at 40 or whatever.

also to try and circumvent the potential replies to this, mental health, poverty, finally situations, etc. could all prevent someone from caring about these superficial things growing up/currently. you can be stylish on a budget for sure, but some people might consider it less of a priority in those cases. also some people could be spoiled womenchildren who don't want to do anything but eat Doritos and play mmorpgs.
