if it makes sense from a canon standpoint, it's different. if it doesn't, it's an established relationship AU, not a headcanon. again: would you let someone in if they just decided their character was a vampire because canon never said they weren't?

i remember that too lol. this is definitely the kind of "game" that will self-select for the people you aren't rping with anyway so it's funny but nbd to me

the beauty is you don't have to care. i just find it funny that the general consensus here is that some ocs are fetishists using rp for therapy but 'addicted to homophobic persecution with dutch flavor' has a free pass for being vanity published.

if there's a plausible canon reason why their character would be a vampire, like say they're playing the malleable protagonist from baldur's gate and they romanced astarion (this even happens in some endings), then yes, i would let them in. i might personally think that's stupid, and i might hate those endings, but it's very possible in canon and i have no good faith reason to deny it.

ships are easily plausible in most canons. if both players are into it, that's fine, and you'd only be rejecting them because you're weird. a potential problem is if one half of the ship drops, then you get a new player and the existing one pressures them about shipping. it's not 2008 and we're not on livejournal and the chances of that happening are low but if it happens you can vent your weird anti rage then.

i don't want to "hi x" because i know they're always wrong, but it stretches suspension of disbelief to think anyone but the player is in here testily defending them since she never actually has any cr. she churns out dozens of character journals a month, does a text thread or two, flakes, then churns out more, spends hours on plurk tittering about them, never does any threads, over and over. i don't know why she needs so many, because they're all the same exact character with some flavor details shuffled from journal to journal and she never threads anyway.

genuine question, do people really do that? i’ve only ever experienced characters coming in with romantic feelings and going on to become official in the game, playing them as having had a secret relationship during canon itself is new to me

people do it all the time. it's only an issue in this context because ffxiv people haven't experienced fresh air or grass since 2013.

from what i've seen i wouldn't say it's most dwrpers, at this point, but more like a large crew of mostly the same people that rolls from big game to big game

there are some notorious wols that are obvious self inserts, ridiculously overpowered, or both. coupled that with that the "Warrior of Light" is the main protagonist of FFXIV and you can see the issue, especially for NPC players since they can all of a sudden have a sparkly gay catboy run up and expect the best friend treatment. the players of characters that people are very horny for suffer the most for this, as emet-selch and g'raha tia players were mobbed by wols on sight. so yes: there are some very bad wols out there, the reputation did not come out of nowhere. a notorious example would be neth, who plays a au ra warrior of light that has maxed out every single job, insists on being able to use as many of the video game skills as she can (and since ffxiv is a MMORPG, the skills would be pretty OP for most games), demands to be the center of everyone's attention, and will ship push with NPC players while driving out anyone that gets in the way of them.

however the flip side is that ffxiv got a huge explosion of popularity during the shadowbringers expansion a few years ago, and you have people that resent anything that's popular, people that are upset because their ship partner dropped everything because they became obsessed with ffxiv, and people who are sick of ffxiv because it seemingly takes up everything. i would say that ffxiv is still popular but not as much as it was two years ago, but this is dwrp. people will hold onto grudges and resentment for years. so yes, there is at least someone who has a bug up their ass about ffxiv hanging around and ready to bitch whenever they see the opportunity.

this is definitely at least a few people's specific point of rage, on wg or not. i know someone who swears up and down they never look at wankgate and don't even really know what wankgate is, but every so often they'll go on a big tirade about how they lost another rp partner or thread to a canon they don't play (in particular gachas and ff14, since they put out content continuously and people tend not to drop them in a month and come back) and suddenly there'll be a post on wg about how bad that thing is

ayrt and yeah, that's exactly the sort of thing i mean. there wouldn't be anything contradicting canon for two players to come in with erwin and levi and treat them as though they're an existing ship as long as they played it in a way that would fit into canon because them being a ship could plausibly work within the confines of what we're shown in canon. saying "yeah these characters have been quietly dating for a while" doesn't necessarily go against canon as long as the characters are being played ic and the ship itself doesn't contradict anything in canon.
