what's funny about this comment is "welcome to dwrp" gags aside it's pretty revealing of how much we talk about wols on wankgate vs. how much the average dwrp player actually thinks about or even interacts with wols

like why is wankgate so obsessed with wols? they seem to come up literally every single post. i kind of suspect that one of the regulars here has a bug up their ass about them and constantly brings them up and that's how we ended up this way. does gsai really hate wols? is hellion nursing a grudge against a wol? what is going on here

because they're jealous, obviously

there are some notorious wols that are obvious self inserts, ridiculously overpowered, or both. coupled that with that the "Warrior of Light" is the main protagonist of FFXIV and you can see the issue, especially for NPC players since they can all of a sudden have a sparkly gay catboy run up and expect the best friend treatment. the players of characters that people are very horny for suffer the most for this, as emet-selch and g'raha tia players were mobbed by wols on sight. so yes: there are some very bad wols out there, the reputation did not come out of nowhere. a notorious example would be neth, who plays a au ra warrior of light that has maxed out every single job, insists on being able to use as many of the video game skills as she can (and since ffxiv is a MMORPG, the skills would be pretty OP for most games), demands to be the center of everyone's attention, and will ship push with NPC players while driving out anyone that gets in the way of them.

however the flip side is that ffxiv got a huge explosion of popularity during the shadowbringers expansion a few years ago, and you have people that resent anything that's popular, people that are upset because their ship partner dropped everything because they became obsessed with ffxiv, and people who are sick of ffxiv because it seemingly takes up everything. i would say that ffxiv is still popular but not as much as it was two years ago, but this is dwrp. people will hold onto grudges and resentment for years. so yes, there is at least someone who has a bug up their ass about ffxiv hanging around and ready to bitch whenever they see the opportunity.

people that are upset because their ship partner dropped everything because they became obsessed with ffxiv

this is definitely at least a few people's specific point of rage, on wg or not. i know someone who swears up and down they never look at wankgate and don't even really know what wankgate is, but every so often they'll go on a big tirade about how they lost another rp partner or thread to a canon they don't play (in particular gachas and ff14, since they put out content continuously and people tend not to drop them in a month and come back) and suddenly there'll be a post on wg about how bad that thing is

For some extra context, the longstanding ff14 dwrpers of questionable quality like Quko, Neth, and Shiny also came here from a period where in-game ff14 rp communities were very strict about the lore compliance of ff14 ocs and weren't that interested in playing with wols from the start. DWRP basically got the rejects.

did any of them ever RP in the game to begin with, though?

in mmo rp it's common to make ocs to rp who have nothing to do with the main story, and highly uncommon, and frowned upon, to rp the main character.

it’s more common to play OCs from the setting than the protagonist role the game puts the player in. it avoids the whole spider-man pointing at spider-man meme, and because of that it was considered gauche to play a actual warrior of light.

as a aside, i don’t think it’s a problem playing a wol in dwrp - it’s a lot easier if you’re playing with someone who’s canon blind or just somewhat familiar if you kind of have a storyline and history on hand. it’s very different in ffxiv because if someone is playing the game then they’re already invested in the world and probably are very familiar with the setting, so they’re able to create more elaborate backgrounds like Upchuck McGee from the street corner who is actually a secret lab test experiment that escaped, a surly magician that performs unauthorized autopsies in the name of research and disguises their activities with a taxidermy shop, and so on. or it could be just as something as simple as “stupid man who is loud and likes to punch things” and participate in fight tournaments.

I wish this were true because all the ff14s I've ever seen around and in games have been wols. The worst part is that they ruin it for mmo rpers in general because mods will just ban all mmo rp characters to avoid the trouble altogether.

Most mmos have stories that assume your character is one of many even if your character might get to be the main character on certain quests. The way ff14 is setup with the NPCs and your role in the story and how one character can play all the classes in the game perfectly is what encourages people to create overpowered self-inserts they are way too invested in.

i think the npcs who get it the worst in dwrp aren't the ones the players are horniest for exactly, but the ones who are the most invested in the wol in canon. emet and g'raha get it rough because of the Very Special Attention they give the wol in shb. same goes for haurchefant and zenos (who, lbr, is functionally haurchefant for villain fuckers in wolshipping spaces). meanwhile scion players don't get it as bad in my experience, because while they all care about the wol they don't usually give the wol that same level of specialized attention. i think the only npc who gets it as bad as the four i listed is aymeric, and you can thank the dinner cutscene for that.

but this is just dwrp. i know someone who used to play an y'shtola alt, and she's got some stories
