(Anonymous) 2024-06-06 05:02 am (UTC)(link)They aren't the best choice for livestock guardians. There are better mastiff breeds for that. They are better suited for being guardians for their owners/family units. They want to be with their people and they are protective of their people. But a lot of them only care for their people and are distrusting of everyone else
They make excellent dogs if raised right but they are not for everyone. They are naturally wary of strange people and animals and have to be socialized heavily and consistently until adulthood. They have a lot of size and power and they are independent thinkers so early training is really important. You don't want a 100lb dog deciding someone is a threat and then not listening to you when you say that person is a friend. I've had similar breeds before but my cane has taken the most work in terms of socialization. The traits that make them loyal and protective of their people also make them suspicious of everyone else, and children are a known trigger to undersocialized canes because they move in unpredictable ways that can come across as threatening, and their role is to protect and defend
It's how they're raised...but it's also genetics.
