legitimate question, what are your thoughts on someone's rp roster being several characters across different fandoms but all played by the same actor? do they just really like the actor and it's harmless?

(Anonymous) 2024-06-11 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
first thought would be hazardously high likelihood of rpf vibes tbh

(Anonymous) 2024-06-11 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
it's basically guaranteed to be either rpf or someone with a very bizarre fixation on a real person, and either way why step in dog shit when you can avoid it

(Anonymous) 2024-06-11 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
it's not harmless

(Anonymous) 2024-06-11 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
can you elaborate on the harm

(Anonymous) 2024-06-11 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
two would be fine if they're vastly different characters like maybe florence pugh as yelena vs irulan or jensen ackles as dean vs soldier boy, but once it hits three there's some weird shit going on.

op

(Anonymous) 2024-06-11 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah it's more than three. i should add that they play a couple other characters in their roster, but this particular actor across a variety of roles is what got me wondering what is going on.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-11 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
two and it could be harmless. more than that and it's probably an obsession, especially if there are OCs involved.

used to write with someone like this and assumed it was because they just liked the actor and his work. until they tried to share their rpf fanfic about him with me. they played at least 5 characters with his face. 3 of them in the same game at one point.

they later joined one of those 'celeb' games as the actor and had him divorce his wife to ship him with other celebrities, while playing his young kids as NPCs. very weird to say the least.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-11 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
for me it's not the rpf angle as much as the fact that it means they're probably playing characters they're not actually interested in and they're probably not great at writing them. playing a character just because they have the same face as the actor you're obsessed with isn't a great reason.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-11 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
+1 setting aside all the other weird hangings of rpf there's also the plain fact that i've just never seen an rpf-fixated player actually provide particularly good fandom rp on dreamwidth lol

no distinct voices or fun use of the characters' individual qualities, they all thread virtually the same. it's clearly just about parading around the actor's face for that player

(Anonymous) 2024-06-12 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
+1 ime people who do this aren't harmful, they're just boring rp partners

(Anonymous) 2024-06-12 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
+3

I've run into multiple people who play three or more characters played by the same actor and without fail, none of their characters had anything resembling a personality.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-12 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
likely no ic/ooc boundaries, and is obssessed with the actor to the point of being unhealthy. that's a garden of red flags, do not engage.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-12 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
The one person I knew who did this was a bit of an odd duck socially, but aside from their characters all being pretty bland and samey, they really were harmless. They kept their head down, played their characters in the game, and stayed in their own lane.

They did like to collect actual props from the movies the actor was in, which someone tried to namedrop them here about like it was some big deal, but people shut that down pretty quick. Frankly I don't care how someone spends their money if it's not hurting anyone. It's a bit obsessive but then so is blowing $500 on pins or Funko pops or gacha games. I guess it was the fact somehow those are more socially acceptable for a bunch of nerds smashing barbies to approve of than to spend $500 on an actor's coat or whatever that made people think it was alright to try and make fun of them.

i think people get weirded out because it wasn't just the movie props but also the $500+ huge tattoos of the actor's roles. at least the tats look good, but yeah. i REALLY hope the tats are only of gyllenhaal's roles, because previously they were obsessed in the same way (with matching plurk username before they changed it to be gyllenhaal themed, rp journal, merch, rl vacation to relevant countries, etc.) with the wizard nazi grindelwald.

that one still baffles me, fangirling a wizard nazi. it's not like the nazi reveal was pulled out of jkr's ass years after the fact like dumbledore being gay, or treated as subtext, it was actual canon since the books.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the tattoos, which definitely was a bit more disturbing. The only ones I remembered her getting were Detective Loki ones, which yeah was weird, but people get tattoos their fav characters have all the time. I'm actually glad I didn't know her during the 'wizard nazi fangirl' phase, that would have been a giant NOPE from me. At least obsessing over an actor with a pretty face is a lot healthier relatively speaking.

It's really none of my business but is she loaded and just spending her money the she wants or is one of those people who has driven themselves into poverty thanks to their obsession? None of the stuff she ever bought or those tats were cheap.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-12 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
meh, they might've come from ij where people will get attached to particular "face claims" for their ocs. it might be harmless, but i'd tread carefully.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-14 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm a person who plays several characters played by the same actor. in my case i have 3 that i've played regularly, i have a certain type of character that i like to play and this actor just happens to play those roles often

i believe i'm in the "really like the actor and it's harmless" group, and i've met others who do this and they're not creepy obsessed, we just like what we like

that said, i see why it looks odd and i don't doubt some people who do this are weirdos. i think rpf is extremely strange. a lot of the behavior mentioned by others in this thread would be a red flag to me too. just saying some of us are harmless i promise lol

(Anonymous) 2024-06-14 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
thanks for lettung us know

(Anonymous) 2024-06-15 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
You definitely sound like one of the weirdos, sorry to say.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-15 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
they're never self aware lol

(Anonymous) 2024-06-15 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
out of curiosity, why? genuine question. is there a scenario in your mind where a person could play multiples of the same pb without it being weird?

(Anonymous) 2024-06-15 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
da

tbh I don't personally think it's weird, but maybe because I compare it to people who play/love characters voiced by the same actor. Sometimes you just really like someone's acting and portrayal, and as long as you differentiate their voices enoough, I'd just assume that's what it is.

some people think it's overinvestment or projecting your thirst for an actor, which it can be, and people just like to turn their noses up on anyone who dares to like something so much in their face.

da. maybe if the characters were so different that i couldn't tell from glancing at the muselist that they were the same actor? but it's usually all the same person in roles geared towards them looking as conventionally attractive as possible. it tells me that the player's tastes are shallow and bland, and while they might be perfectly nice and "harmless", they're probably boring with a side of secondhand embarrassment. not the worst person by far but not someone i'm excited to befriend.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-15 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
this is wg someone would have commented this no matter what you said. that's why everyone lies here. you should have gone truly unhinged with it
