at this point using ai is still gonna get you probably even more stigma than using a popular faceclaim tho, ppl around here really hate spotting ai

just use picrews and be done with it

+1 picrews are great, even as a stop gap until your commissions are done or whatever

there's a lot with custom options for unusual faces or features

the problem with picrew is the site's become near unusable with ads that ad blockers don't catch. it used to be a decent option but it's becoming impossible to use now.

icon commissions are too high priced for the privilege of playing internet barbies when your money has to go to actual necessities.

pbs, whether they're LA or illustrated, come with limitations since they're of specific characters. that tends to warp character voices to match those visuals which isn't great.

echoing thread op that ai generated icons are a workable option for oc players who are too poor to throw money at icon commissions. just don't claim it as your art because it's not.

and ai icons are going to have people giving you a wide berth because ppl can tell they're ai with all the negative connotations attached

genuinely an iconless journal would give you less stigma

anyway this entire comment just reads like you shooting down every other normal solution so you can justify to yourself how totally fine using ai icons definitely is. if you're really this unable to compromise on your oc's extremely specific features then maybe it's time to try a less visually sparkly oc

or, better yet, just stick to canon characters and leave the ocs to everyone else who've been finding suitable pbs just fine for years before ai was ever a thing

plus, like i've said elsewhere on this mess of a post, if your oc has extremely specific features the ai probably can't conceptualize that anyway

so congrats, now your oc looks nothing like the image you have in your head for them, AND you've isolated a community full of both artists and people who respect artists enough to think they deserve to get paid rather than using the Art Theft Machine 5000

well said. as a perpetually broke oc player, i used to think ai art was an acceptable answer a few years ago but have learned everything in this comment since and am now instead happily using PBs for all of my characters. because there are a zillion options that do not require money already out there.

just note your icons don't match your character exactly and use a good combo of image refs and descriptions of the differences and your rp will be even more immersive than with accurate icons because of using a multimedia approach etc.

yeah i was probably the one of the first people to get posted about on here for it? not even as a player with a name, just someone on bs is using ai art and they suck for it. which i own, it's true. i probably still suck! but not for that reason!

also the trick to your "warps character voices" problem besides that, anon, that is a you problem because i have never heard of anyone having this issue before, is twofold:

you can use icons of actors in more than one role (i know some people hate this but i promise lots of people also do not care, if you're willing to use ai you can use a pb from more than one source) and

you can use icons of individuals whose actual media you have never seen and therefore you do not know who the character being played is and cannot accidentally play them instead, plus

you can use stock icons AND

you can even use more than one pb. it's not common anymore but once upon a time people did this frequently.
