Since we're talking in the context of DWRP, I'm gonna assume you mean other fantasy games where you can play the NPCs without getting your dick wrung out the MP players.

- Skyrim, Dragon's Dogma, and other games riding their coattails usually have MPs that are easy to avoid by just saying that in your NPC's version of the game the Dragonborn/Arisen/whatever never followed the relevant quest line to meet them.

- Elden Ring, Soulsbornes, Hollow Knight, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Come, Shadow of Mordor, most Metroidvanias, lots of older JRPGs, and a ton of other games have 'malleable but not really' protagonists, where the malleable parts of the character are either totally irrelevant or exist only in the player's head. As a bonus a lot of these also fall into the first category.

- In most non-FFXIV MMOs the player characters are nobodies, or easily avoided like the first category. World of Warcraft, Black Desert, Runescape, Guild Wars, probably even the Monster Hunter games.

- Immersive sims tends to have semi-malleable protagonists where the only changes in story or personality are some dialogue options. Thief and Dishonored are probably closest to fantasy, but if you want to branch our into sci-fi/modern stuff there's also Deus Ex, Bioshock, STALKER, Deathloop, or even something like Red Dead Redemption 2.

- And finally there are some actual CRPGs with fixed protagonists. Planescape: Torment and Thaumaturge jump to mind, and Baldur's Gate III lets you excise Tav from the plot entirely if you play as either Durge or one of the main party members.

But you don't actually need to play any of these if you want to avoid malleable protagonists. Speaking as a reformed doormat, I can promise you that you'll be much, much happier when you learn how to set and enforce boundaries with Warden/Hawke/Inquisitor players.

seeing as none of the other games listed are good enough for them they obviously don't actually want games without malleable protagonists either

what they want is for someone to reassure them that dragon age is such a unique gem of a game that they couldn't possibly get a similar or better experience elsewhere and thus they have to put up with malleable protagonists. anything else would mean admitting their own bad experiences are their own fault for not being clear about their preferences up front.

anon. i am the person who asked for recs and i asked aggressively sarcastically bc someone told me this wasn't the place for good faith recs. i actually do just want recs for fantasy games that are good and i don't care that much about DA.

nayrt in that case i will suggest pillers of eternity games. the first game is a little rough and feels like a updated version of the first two Baldur’s Gate games, which makes sense because the lead designer was working on the original BG3 before it got canceled. it’s not necessary to play since the second game will sum it up for you and i feel that the game is a much more polished and refined experience. however if you don’t mind the gameplay being a little rough, i highly recommend playing the first game because the lore you learn through the story really enhances the second game - plus you can port over your save file and have the choices carried through.

i also recommend both of the pathfinder crpg games by owlcat games. they also released the first warhammer crpg not too long ago, but i haven’t had

oh i actually forgot to mention: baldur’s gate i/ii was developed at bioware. dragon age was supposed to be a spiritual sequel since they didnt have the license anymore. so if you liked the first game and hated how the sequels became more action orientated, like me, the games i mentioned above are more in line with how DA1 played.

also if you don’t mind old computer games and playing by dnd 2e rules, give the original bg games a try. i’ve replayed the game so many times in the past 20 years, especially since i couldn’t find a game that scratched the exact urge it does until pillars of eternity

that really depends on what you're looking for in a fantasy game. do you want open world, turn-based, branching story options, what? traditional fantasy or sci-fi fantasy?

da, but i definitely would not consider either emily or corvo attano to be malleable protagonists - you can make choices that change the outcome, but their personalities are largely the same except for "blood for the blood god" versus "i guess i'll pull this punch," and their backgrounds are set in stone
