+1 large casts just end up either start visibly taking over the game (via network posts, player plots etc) or - and this is way more likely - they all squat in each other's inboxes and kill activity because they are the majority of the game and they're not tagging out anymore

ideal cap depends on game size. and franchises like final fantasy should be grouped imo.

+0.5

It depends really on the players but some franchises are less likely to tag others in said franchise, and that may also depend on which parts are picked up

Case by case for certain franchises though. I won't name any but some are basically guaranteed to barely tag out

Final Fantasy seems like an example of a franchise where tagging from other installments isn't guaranteed.

(Though my bias may be informed there by the fact that I've never seen an Emet-Selch and Hythlodaeus who'd give other people in their game the time of day, canonmate or not.)

It's a good bias anon. And accurate but the XIV ecosystem on DW are either overpowered rejects(WoLs) or ostracized (they play NPCs instead of OCs how gauche) from the in-game community so it's pretty fucked and not the litmus test I'd suggest

sorry guys but you're all the fucking same to us

XIV players don't seem to realize they all look like assholes from the outside.

XIV players are why i stopped playing from final fantasy games. Every single one i ran into expected their WoL OC to be relevant to my character from another title entirely because chocobos or whatever else.

DW XIV players are the ones that even the *fuks u gud* rpers wouldn't touch

that is exactly it. it seemed like every WoL player i ran into was running on thirst and looking for any possible in.

i don’t know why you think that because WoL OCs love (most) NPC characters, doubly so if they play hot ones that everyone lusts over

they probably mean from the actual roleplay community within ffxiv. it's rare to see WoLs there, ime, and most NPC players are cosplay accounts or joke accounts.

i think it'd be neat if dwrp games banned wols but allowed setting ocs in games, the kind with no canon npc relationships allowed, which is what most people in the xiv community play.

This is exactly what I meant, and I like that idea a lot

the comment i responded to explicitly specified dreamwidth in here: https://wankgate.dreamwidth.org/66525.html?thread=268639965#cmt268639965

i'd also disgree that all NPC accounts are only jokes/cosplay. there are definitely some that are RPing as NPCs, but usually ones like the heavenwards knights. there was a nanamo running around on balmung a few years back too. they aren't that common though since as mentioned above most people are playing OCs with no canon relationships to NPCs.

however that doesn't automatically make them better because i have seen some truly insane backstories like characters being dragons in disguise, the secret love child from the garlean royal family, secret princes/princesses on the run, etc. because some people absolutely can't stand not being the center of attention or the story revolving around them.

i disagree, since each final fantasy game is a contained story with their own cast. it would be like trying to put a cap on something like disney vs putting a cap on say... kingdom hearts resident evil. one has multiple entries with essentially the same cast while the other is a conglomerate that is comprised of multiple worlds and multiple casts that have never even heard of each other.

franchises is where I feel things start getting convoluted. Too many shows/versions with too many characters. To use a super popular example, Marvel is a franchise. So a franchise cap would get flooded with MCU, when there's also comics versions that have MCU counterpart, a few TV series, and now because of Disney buying things, XMen count too. Same goes with DC.

It's the same with Final Fantasy. Cloud, Squall, and Prompto couldn't have more different worlds. A Zidane has less in common with a Kefka than a Batman has with a Constantine.

I feel if you're going to do a franchise cap, you might as well just have a lower cast cap instead to avoid flooding too much from one franchise. Rather than a franchise cap for say... all Persona characters, especially when the first 2 persona games don't even get half as much attention as 3-5, all of them should just cap lower. Same with mihoyos and final fantasies and whatever canon people hate seeing too much of.
