i'm gonna be the one guy and say they're not necessary at all if you're being selective with your apps. i think the most actually well-written characters in one cast i've ever seen was six, and i remember that because of how unusual it was. if you're letting in 10 people from one cast, i'd put money on 4-6 of them being not good. just keep in mind that it's your sandbox, you decide who can play in it, and no game anywhere needs players who'll get their threads dropped after a few pity tags.

nobody is selective with apps anymore, they're basically just filtering for 2nd-grade literacy and vibes that aren't too rancid to tolerate anymore

i agree but it's confusing because the switch to invite-only should have theoretically given people much more leeway to be selective with apps, and mods of invite games still let the same bad players in

but if they didn't do that, there'd be no need for cast caps. tbh the more i think about it the more cast caps seem like a lazy way to look like you care about who's in the game while you're really prepared to just let in the first ten players of that cast no matter how boring their tags are and call it a day

You're mistaking the point of invite-only though. Most of them aren't there to deter mediocre writing. As long as the characters still fit the basics they expect, then they'll pass. Their main goal is to stop problem players from coming in, or keep the crowd to people who they and their friends know.

I've seen casts where their apps are all pretty solid so I don't know how much quality checking would really avoid a need for a cap. Now, if there's a way for mods to know who would just squat in a game and reject their apps based only on that, that much I'd prefer because often they are bandwagon joiners with big casts so they can have instant cr and keep afloat in the game with minimal to no effort.

when playing on the tdm is a requirement for getting an invite, you can see both whether their tagging is actually good and who they tag (or ignore)

if they tag their ship partner and no one else, easy hard pass

if they start 16 threads and after a week they've tagged a few of them back once, there's your player who's in three other games but feels a compulsory need to highlander or join what their friends join
