i will never understand the level of hate 'yaoihounds' get around here. fandom's love for yaoi laid the groundwork for the lgbtqia+++ ally movement, and timeless artistic triumphs like loveless and gravitation led to widespread acceptance of queerness in mainstream entertainment. yaoi fans were pioneers of queer acceptance, and yet we still shit on them like they're the foaming-at-the-mouth paddle-wielding sasunaru fans they were fifteen years ago.

it's been so long that i guess it will never truly go away but i wish it would.

i know this is bait and i am biting it like an idiot but i do admit that getting into yaoi/shounen-ai in the past is probably what made me more accepting of lgbtq++ growing up, especially when everyone around me is homophobic in various levels. like i grew up extremely uncomfortable about how people in my family and community talked, and had on more than one occasion correct them because of just how badly they would stereotype or act about the community. i could have easily just grown up that way too without it, since majority of my exposure to lgbtq++ as a child and school years were through media before ljrp. Yuri/shoujo-ai I became more open to later because I had my own hang-ups about it before and associated it largely with extreme hentai kinks, even if I know theoretically there were good content out there.

of course they're not bastions of representation. some content are rancid like a lot of media can be, and there are those who really just treat queer content in a really creepy, fetishy manner that shows how disconnected they are from real people. however, i think a lot of the content especially nowadays where more and more stories seem grounded with everyday people just make it easier to enjoy. there are just some fans and haters you don't want to interact with ever.

anon, ten years ago was 2014. the Obergefell decision was 2015. two side characters being in a gay relationship would have indeed been a big deal, but "torches and pitchforks" is extremely hyperbolic. 2014 was korrasami walking off into the proverbial sunset, for a point of comparison.

currently we are seeing a major conservative backlash, which is a discussion that is a whole different can of worms.
