(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)one of the things that made both the nolanverse batman and the disney mcu work is that they started from the ground up and made their own universe with a different tone than the existing story, so it runs parallel to other content rather than overriding it or trying to frankenstein with it. contrast that with disney star wars that is trying to messily graft itself onto the existing original and prequel trilogies while maintaining a drastically different tone and story approach.
the racist and sexist chuds among the fanbase can kick rocks, their opinions are garbage and so are they. the fanbase who love star wars for being campy heroic space opera get to be legit disappointed that the folks in charge of disney lucasfilm wouldn't know camp if it bit them on the ass and think optimism is for children.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)that was expressly discussed in this very subthread, except no one used the exact term "the message"

Re: da
(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)the mandalorian is like, all camp, and the tone of everything new SW is optimistic except rogue one/andor
Re: da
(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)shockingly, this is alienating to people who liked the old stuff
also shockingly, the stuff that doesn't start from the assumption that the old stuff sucked (mandalorian, rogue one, andor) is not nearly as divisive.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-22 01:37 am (UTC)(link)how could anybody walk away from the disney material thinking they had a hate-on of spite for the prior canon just because they doubled down on making the jedi assholes every time they had the opportunity, made luke 'literally ready to die rather than strike down Darth Vader in anger' skywalker a psychotic asshole who tried to murder his own nephew, undid all of han solo's character development and made him a self-centered manchild again, completely undid the entire victory against the empire, and generally just shit all over every square inch of the original trilogy and made everything and everyone in it pathetic retroactively
i don't know where anybody could get that idea, they must just be mad because there's a woman in it.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-22 02:02 am (UTC)(link)--in particular the fact that apparently luke is shit at teaching in every timeline, womp womp
TO BE CLEAR that is not to say that disliking the new films' interpretation can't also be based on solid, thoughtful interpretation of established canon. i just wanted to share this as a counterpoint.
(overall, my spouse liked the first and second movies of the new trilogy a lot, but was disappointed in the third. since the movies were also what they used to get ME into star wars, i will confess to a continued fondness for them, despite the damage the third film did.)

(Anonymous) 2024-08-22 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)With the added bonus of a revealing look into his own psyche because he's clearly utterly defined by his own past and letting it dictate every single action he takes.
