ayrt and exactly, the best m/f ship i've ever played (and one i still miss to this day) was a crosscanon ship that basically wound up being a battle couple where both my guy and his eventual wife kicked ass together in their game. fun as hell because she was just as tough and savvy as my guy so their dynamic was really electric and they kept each other on their toes. (she also topped him in bed on more than one occasion.)

i would play so much more m/f if i could find more ships like that one, i had an absolute blast with it.

i'd point out that that dynamic is still directly contrary to western history's mores, but it doesn't matter, because it's simple: if someone's repeatedly casting their line out for a big stwong man to pwotect their baby blorbo uwu, whether m or f, you can bet good money they get flaked on and ghosted a lot, because for a variety of reasons there's no easier way to tell that someone's either a boring rper or self-inserting or both

i think sometimes it's not so much about the protection tropes as it is the tropes of the characters themselves. just a quick example but think of the characteristics people give the two p3 protagonists or the personalities of otome protagonists vs the male equivalent. there's a difference in what vibes they give off and while it isn't like one is less bland than the other, the specific version of bland probably appeals to someone more than the other brand.

there's probably a bit more to it too, but tl;dr i think it's usually that there's a difference in the character's personality that changes the appeal, even if not like every trait is different.

i think it's also the fact that a lot of people are just plain tired of the whole "man big strong protector" trope because that's what's ALWAYS written. a woman being the protector is unusual and that in and of itself makes it more interesting in a lot of ways.
