My icon pet peeve is people using myriad fan art icons when their characters have plenty of screentime with have good, expressive graphics/art styles. Doesn't stop me from tagging with them, but it irrationally bugs me.
Maybe it's a case of ymmv with the canon art? I find a lot of my character's canon art nice, but the fanart drawn for them is just spectacular too and sometimes just prefer the fanart.
Someone I know does this for one of the main characters in their series and it drives me crazy. Most of the fanart they use is uglier than the canon art.
i'm willing to give touhou players a pass to an extent. iirc the characters are supposed to be young adults, but zun's artstyle makes them look like... well, lolis. so, fanart that makes them look older doesn't bug me. that said, they still shouldn't have basketball sized tits hanging off their chest.
I know that some fan artists aren't comfortable when their stuff is used for things like DWRP (or LJRP). Which is understandable, I guess. I mean, I'd sideeye people who use something I drew for fun in a smut thread too...
as someone who does this, some of the early games my character is in has a seriously bad case of uncanny valley when it comes to screencaps. in-game the effect isn't noticed because everything's going by rather quickly. he's meant to look pretty realistic and just looks awkward and/or creepy as fuck when he makes expressions outside of bog-standard neutral/seriousface.
I try to avoid this, but sometimes there aren't many icons of the character already made and I can't find good screencaps to make icons from :\ It's frustrating because I do prefer using official art to fanart where at all possible.
If it's from TV or Let's Plays with cutscenes, do you know how to make your own screencaps? If you don't, would you like a fairly quick, easy guide? I know learning how to do it has been a great help to me, so I don't mind using a sock to share.
Alright! Here is how I personally go about making caps.
There's one essential program you'll need to make this work: Media Classic Player - Home Cinema. If you don't have it already, you can get it here. I also suggest downloading and installing the Combined Community Codec Pack. I don't think you need it to make these caps, but I consider it to be a staple if you're into watching fansubs (like I am).
Once you've got that, the first thing you want to do is to open a video file (any will do - we're just setting up here) and go to View > Options.... From there, you'll want to open up the Playback settings on the left. On the right, you'll want to look for two things: Playback, Default track preference, and Open settings.
On Playback, click the 'Play' radio button and set it to 0 time(s). What this does is make it so that your video (and therefore your caps) won't start until you hit Play. It comes in very handy for changing options without having a handful of caps getting taken first.
On Default track preferences, make sure all of the fields are cleared. Nothing in 'em. That's all.
On Open settings, just make sure Auto-load subtitles is unchecked. This is one of two steps to make sure subtitles don't appear on your caps (indispensable if you want to cap anime).
You are done here. Hit Apply and Okay.
Now, we'll go on to the other thing you need to do to turn subtitles off. In your taskbar, you need to look for the Haali Media Splitter. It's a white, square icon. Double-click it to get it to pop up, then go to the Options tab. Open up the Languages tree, then click on Audio and Subtitle languages. In the Value: field, type in *,off. Hit Apply, then Okay. You're done here.
Here's the good part - Time to make some caps!
In your taskbar, find the ffdshow video decoder. The icon looks like a small, red square with FFV on it. Double-click it to get the configuration screen to open up. On the left side, look for Grab. Click on it to place a check beside it, then turn your attention to the right side.
Grab should already have a check. If it doesn't, click it so it does. Under that, select the radio button for Every frame. Then, look for Grab every [ ] frame. In the [ ], put in whatever value you like.
I hate to say it, but I'm not entirely sure what the "right" rate is here... I just know that the lower the number is, the more caps you'll get. I use 5, myself, and get about 6,000 or so caps for a standard episode of anime. This is probably way more than I need, but I like to be thorough. Play around and see what works for you!
Next, we want to set where our caps are going to go. This is set in the Path field. Note that you'll want to make the folder you want your caps to go to first, as you won't be able to make folders from here (or at least I was never able to). Click on [...], find and select your folder, and hit OK.
In the Name prefix field, put whatever you like. I personally use an abbreviation of the title of the thing I'm watching and, if it's an anime, the episode number (and season before that, if it applies), followed by a hyphen. So if I'm capping the tenth episode of the first season of Sailor Moon, my prefix would be 'sm0110-'.
For best cap results, you want to set your Image format to PNG and Quality: to 100.
Hit Apply, then OK, and you are done!
Barring me forgetting anything crucial (I've had this setup for a while, so I might have missed something along the way), you are now ready to take your very own screencaps of whatever you want! Close the video you had open to set all of this up (the settings won't kick in until you do), open up the file you want to cap from, turn the volume off, hit Play, and sit back and let MPC-HC do all the work.
There's one thing I'd like to note before I go. If you're on a laptop like I am... or, heck, any computer with a tendency to get hot quickly... I highly rec not having anything else going while this is running. Just a fair warning.
I'd also like to rec the program I use to convert YouTube videos: YouTube Downloader HD.
I think that's all I have to say! The setup isn't exactly as 'quick' as I made it out to be, but once you have it set up it's a breeze. Again, I've had this setup going for long enough that I might've forgotten something, so if anything goes wrong feel free to let me know and I'll try to figure out where I screwed up. If you want caps of the process, just tell me and I'll get to work on that as soon as I get home again.
i can't stand it when relatively inactive people/people who tag predominantly from their phones constantly buy paids and extra icons, but the majority of the time they tag only with the default icon or one or two others.
why the fuck are you buying all these icons when you never ever use them?
