1. That players can't just suck it up and deal. Ever. Ever ever.

2. If you don't like an event/plot development/player plot that is opt in. Don't do it. Don't make (unsure) faces and talk about how the game isn't catering itself to your preferences alone.

3. That people assume mods are canon savvy in everything that comes their way. Some bad apps will get through. We scan the wiki page, do a quick look for a blurb/cut-scene/trailer and if it seems to hit the main points and the sample is readable, then it's in.

4. That players can't take responsibility for themselves at all. It's always another player's fault, or the mods' fault. Never themselves.

5. >Have one major event every six weeks/two months
>Wah the game is moving too slowly
>Have one major event every four weeks/one month
>Wah the game is moving too quickly

goddamn, all of this

especially #3- we do our best to keep bad apps out, but mistakes, misjudgments, and misinformation (especially in the case of relying on fandom wikis, because yes, they can be sparse, outdated, outright wrong or even nonexistent) do happen

I'll add to say that the first one should have within reason, because I've been on both sides--and as a player, that first one--the deal with it attitude from mods--should only be over certain things. If they're making the game where you can't effect plot at all, then yeah, players don't have to Deal With It.

I feel like I could have written #3 with how my game's getting skewered every time someone sees an app get through that they don't approve of. Especially here on wankgate.

This comm never stops to realize that there are dozens (maybe hundreds) of people reading this comm and of course there's always going to be someone who knows That Player, knows the details, knows the canon better... we're two people. We try hard to do our best. All we can do is do what we can and deal with problems if they come up in game.

the hiatus/drop page is not just there for decoration

use it

it is not the ooc comm we process drops and take hiatuses into account from

So sick of hearing people whine "but I went on hiatus!" when they couldn't take fifteen seconds to toss a comment up on the appropriate page.

long free of modhood now thank fucking god, but i just remembered: co-mods who think anons are universally eeeeeeeeviiiiiiiil.

On the flipside, co-mods who think that we need to start changing rules that have been in place for a long time and that no one has complained about because one anon who admits they're not even in the game doesn't like it.

Not really a peeve, I guess, but I've reached a point where I like RP, my game, the friends I've made, and I especially like seeing what other people are threading, but my actual desire to play is almost nil. I'd seriously rather just process apps and maintain lists.

Hey, Co-Mod. Being a mod does not make you an all-knowing and all-seeing oracle of eternal truth. It is entirely possible for you to be wrong. So when players come to you with plain fact backing up their argument, I don't want to have to hear them complaining that you refused to back down from what you were wrong on and hassled them about it. It just makes us look bad.

I put that information in the plotting post. I know the plotting post is long, but it had the answer to the question you were asking.

Please read the damn post.

You are not a mod.

You do not get to hound other players about tags, especially ones that aren't important to the game and are in a fucking musebox.

"Hey other mod, it's time for AC to go up, do you want me to get it?"

"Nah I got it."

AC goes up a day late because other mod never posted it even after giving them ample time to do it.

"Hey other mod, me and mod3 don't agree on this app, can you read it and be the final vote?"

"Yeah sure."

They don't get back to us, and me and mod3 just decide between the two of us.

"Hey other mod, mod3 is apping and can't vote for her app, can you read it and be the second vote?"

"I'll read it after work."

After work becomes two weeks later, and in the end I just approved it on my vote alone. This also pissed off several players, since we've always required agreement on apps and it looks like mod favoritism.

"Hey other mod, mod3 has a concert tonight and I have a date. Do you think you can handle posting ATP? We already have the code ready to go, you just have to post it when ATP goes up."

"Yeah don't worry I got it."

I come home three hours later, ad isn't posted, and by the time I get it up it's hidden on page fifty-million.

OTHER MOD. WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU A MOD IF YOU DON'T DO ANY WORK?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Can you and your other co-mod agree to drop them as mod, and find someone else to step up?

Re: Mods' Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
i have been there, brosis.

confront them. give a timeframe for improvement. if improvement doesn't occur, make them step down.

Re: Mods' Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I had co-mods like this, and they happened to be RL friends. Stepping down was the best thing I ever did for me, because otherwise I would have driven myself crazy and ruined those friendships. You have my sympathies, anon.

Re: Mods' Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Players who complain that we make everyone completely unable to affect plots while at the same time other players are openly, publicly affecting plots. Vague bitching of "I feel ineffective!!" is not helpful criticism in the first place, for one. For another, you'll see people asking if their plotting ideas can affect events in nearly every single event ooc post and we almost always say yes.

If you want to have an effect on the plot, come up with something and present it to us. It isn't our job to do all of your personal plotting for you. You have plenty of advance notice of where things are going. Do your own damned roleplaying.

Re: Mods' Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
But anon that requires effort on their part. It's much better when the mods go out of their way to rub their sore bottoms and spoonfeed them important information and important roles in events without them having to actually do any legwork to make what they want happen.

My game got accused of being cliquey because a handful of characters would get a lot of action in game events. Guess what, none of those players were besties with the mods; none of us were even on their plurk timelines. Their characters got action because those players were active in coming to us and presenting ideas and being actively involved in planning openly on event plotting posts. If all a player does is bitch anonymously about how the mods aren't presenting everything on a silver platter to them then of course their character is going to end up sidelined. We're not going to go directly to every single person in the game and ask them personally if they want their character to get to do something special in this event.

And spare me the sob stories about tyrannical mods in other games. We never ran the game like that and did everything we possibly could to be friendly and inclusive and open to ideas. We never turned down an idea we got unless it was literally impossible in the game setting. After a certain point a player has to get over themselves and their previous game trauma and be proactive about getting what they want.

On the other hand, I've been on the other side of this. And the only ones who could affect meta plot? Were mod characters.

co-mod, if you take a hiatus for medical issues which make typing difficult, i expect you to be on hiatus, not furiously app writing for faster games

or hell, be smarter about it: what i don't know about from you plurking about it won't hurt me

Re: Mods' Pet Peeves

I've got a similar issue with an rp partner. yeah...it'd hurt less if they were just honest about not being into this game. and the whole mod angle makes it worse for you, I imagine.
