what do you think of it when a player interjects ooc commentary on their character in tags (when describing behaviour, characteristics, appearance, etc)? do you think it's endearing and adds a more relaxed vibe to playing, or a bit of a nuisance?

I don't mind in more relaxed RP situations but in a serious thread it really ruins the mood.

yeah - a comical scene with some ooc commentary is cool, but with a scene that evokes an element of drama/horror? yeah, it would agitate a bit.

Oops, I'm guilty of doing it in serious threads from time to time because I'm self-conscious and worry the other mun might think I'm being melodramatic if I don't, because that was definitely the attitude of the places I used to RP before coming here.

Glad to hear folks in journal RP don't think like that, I guess?

i usually do that if i think it should be obvious that my character is an unreliable narrator and that the other mun should be in the know.

otherwise, i don't consciously do it.

yeah, that'd be understandable. i mean more like a serious scene where the player writes something like, "he knew his cohort was in the right, but didn't want to admit it because lbr, he's a massive butthurt manchild with megalomaniac tendencies and right now a snotty mug drizzled with man-tears." if that's your sense of humour, cool! a joke now and then's awesome, but i feel in a more serious scenario it would rob it of tension and subtlety.

in my personal experience most RPers do not understand subtlety at all and you have to go to that level of extreme exaggeration to not have them think a)you missed something or b)you deeply agree with and avidly defend/justify this heinous villain and his disgusting view points.

Commentary is a sad neccessity when portraying characters who are wrong about something, otherwise you will cause OOC buttpain of epic proportions.

Most rpers don't realize this, because they never allow their characters to be wrong in important situations, which is as bad.

It can be a little of both or either one, depending upon the quality of the IC part of the tag and the wording of the OOC part of the tag, and how often they do it? At least in my opinion. If they don't do it often and the IC part of their reply is good (read: written well grammatically and engaging) and they don't stick an OOC comment in there all the time it can be endearing and show creativity. On the other hand doing it too much or doing with lower quality IC replies can be annoying.

Oh yeah, as the anon above this stated, it's useful when the character isn't the most reliable for whatever reason.

i like it and do it

not in a dramatic thread, though

i'll do it with casual or humorous threads

if someone's dying or betraying their lifelong friend or something, naw son

it really depends on how it's done. I'm pretty casual with my ooc text and most of the people I play with are too, but when it's like "ljgsd *plurkemote*" all the time I get annoyed by it. The occasional meme/reference works, but not when the ooc text sounds like how the player talks oocly every single tag.
