It also comes up a lot in Japanese horror. Most ghosts are mothers haunting places where their children were mothered, or young girls seeking vengeance for their lost youth.

and a huge amount of youkai are betrayed or brutalized women turning into monsters to seek revenge.

theres a lot of that in the west too, for both above anons.
it just gets drowned out by the sheer volume of Europe.
