It's not needless! I'm trying to set up for future events I plan on weaving into the upcoming few tags to take us out of the boring as fuck mingler small talk that every game everywhere has. Either drop the thread or help me out here, stop ignoring my hooks so you can stonewall me with 'blinks' or other one-liner boring-ass responses! You're boring the pants off of ME!
you do realize the choice is not between piles of unnecessary filler or one-word 'blink' replies, right? that you could include actually relevant content in your tags instead? eesh.
I don't feel like it's irrelevant content, though! It's fun to write and, hopefully, provides a hook for the other player to respond to. I like to treat an RP thread as forwarding some bigger goal in their CR, or for the plot at large. Of course I vary post lengths based on what needs to be said, but sometimes there's just so much set up to do... and that's fun to me!
In any case I was blowing my gasket more to provide the polar opposite of op's complaint than because I felt personally attacked. It's another example of play styles that don't match up, necessarily, in which case I imagine that if OP and I were in a thread, we'd leave off and find other players better suited to our styles. Or maybe that we chatted oocly if we were feeling invested enough to try to make it work.
see, i really don't think we're talking about the same thing. i'm not saying 'anything that isn't a dry statement of the character's current actions is a waste of time'. i like getting some context, some insight, sure. but some people just shove in totally pointless, badly-written filler because, i dunno, they think lengthy posts make them look good.
imagine writing a starter where your character harry calls sally to tell her his dog died. the reply you get dedicates the first two paragraphs to 'in the morning sally woke up. she ate two eggs and did her workout routine as usual and then took a shower. she brushed her hair for fifteen minutes like every morning. she called her mom to say good morning. then she called her dad to also say good morning', and so on and so forth. if that is in any way enjoyable for you to read then... idk what to tell ya buddy. but it's painful to me.
it almost never provides a hook, though. nine times out of ten, when you take out all the navel-gazing, all the other character really sees is the dipshit they're talking to just standing there.
