i feel old because i'm baffled at when/where/how ABO became a thing. it's also puerile imo. somehow manages to be both homophobic and misogynistic, not to mention based on an obsolete theory on lupine behavior that the actual author came out and debunked decades later. it's like it's designed to be the epitome of cringe.
well many of the tropes involved in abo had always been in fics in many ways, but what made it a more "formal and proper" AU was the supernatural kink meme, around the last days of LJ. tumblr in general evolved it from there to what is today.
i agree with op that each fandom has like, some more prominent kinks that show up over and over, and the ones that all of tumblr like in general and you can't escape. you can tell the age of a fandom by the trends it follow in fics. there are exceptions of course, in case of huge fandoms like star wars and harry potter you get both oldie and newbies writing. but compare, let's say, pacific rim versus idk yu yu hakusho. in fact, you can see new but popular canons (like voltron) have low numbers in ff.net because nobody goes there anymore, but old canons keep gaining numbers because those oldies never moved (or update both their ff.net and A03). those old canons don't have much stuff in a03.
after years of werewolves vampires for example, i'm seeing a trend for mermaid aus for example. coffee shop is slowly changing into flower shop. lots of youtuber/podcasters stuff too. and soulmates, fuck, soulmates are everywhere.
