ah that explains things really well, thank you! i think i was having difficulty understanding how just having an animal around helped with things like depression and trauma, but the stuff about keeping to a schedule, having someone depending on them etc makes a lot of sense in that context
it's always shitty when good things that can help people get co-opted by shitheads who just want excuses for things or want to feel special, so i feel you there

i've seen some emotional support dogs help veterans snap out of their ptsd episodes by touching them. it's like everything ayrt said. these animals basically save people's lives.
