sorry, you can't handwave your character into having relevance instead of actually playing.

Holy shit yes. The last time I modded a game the mod team had to deal with accusations of favoritism because certain players kept getting to play roles in major plots. They completely ignored the fact that these were are most active players, and that was why they kept getting so much plot time compared to someone with a third of the activity.

tbh i wish more mods would do this instead of using rng to decide which characters get to be involved. while rng does appear to be the "fair" way of making a decision, so often plot gets handed to flakes who do nothing with it when it could have gone to players who intend to actually rp.

I like the way Lost Carnival does it when they have limited slots: you can pay AC points for big plot parts or use them to wager for more of a chance in the rng (if enough people sign up for rng to be necessary). It's still fair, and if you don't have the AC points to get a slot that's on you.
