you underestimate how often people have genuine concern over people they don't know that well. there's this girl i used to work with who left under pretty bad circumstances, and while i barely talked to her, sometimes something will remind me of her and i'll wonder if she's doing better now. if she left on better terms i would have forgotten all about her.
